Follow the rules and listen to the operator When participating in an organized diving expedition, if any kind, and especially the ones in remote locations with a lot of wildlife and unique situations, it is imperative to listen to the operator conducting the tour before, during, and after, and with that following the rules they give us. Most will think that it’s a given. Still, in my several years of experience as a professional and at times as a guest, I have observed quite the opposite, where some people don’t listen or even worse, they might hear the rules and recommendations but once in the situation decide to do what they feel they know best, suits them better and even actively contest the instructions given. That’s why it’s important to research ahead of time, ask questions, and feel if the operation is in line with what we are comfortable with to avoid surprises and, even more so, conflicts. If we feel that the rules and regulations do not align with us, it’s not our place to change them once on the boat or underwater; it will create chaos, confusion, and conflict and ultimately endanger everyone. It’s a hard reality that divers need to understand and accept if we are to improve diving safety, according to public safety and professional development educators Buck Buchanan and Wally Endres . The two take us for a sobering deep dive into the Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) environments, i.e., your favorite wreck, cave, kelp bed, or swimming pool, and explain how to improve our odds of survival. “𝘖𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘮. Let that sink in for a moment. Despite this statement sounding harsh, it is a reality that we all need to understand and accept. The fact is that humans were not meant to survive in the hostile, subsurface environment we dive in. No amount of planning, risk mitigation, or training will prevent all accidents from occurring. But why is this the case? The diving community is irate at the lack of decisiveness to properly protect the conservation areas around Malta’s shores and the welfare of the thousands of divers that visit them. The immediate shores around the Maltese islands have 15 sites recognised as conservation areas, a handful of which are larger than two football pitches. These are mainly situated around a variety of wrecks, consisting of ships that were scuttled as diving attractions, World War II airplanes, and other wrecks that ended up at the bottom of the sea for different reasons. Many of these near-shore sites are an essential part of Malta’s diving industry product, as well as recreational places for local divers. In contrast to other diving destinations around the world, easy access to these dive sites enables tourists to make the most of their time when visiting the islands. The problem is that these dives sites are subject to inadequate or non-existent management and enforcement measures concerning fishing.
