I was excited to premier my new talk on DEI 2.0: Debate, Engagement & Innovation at the Women in Tech Global Conference this morning (massive shout-out to Anna Radulovski & team for putting this awesome lineup together). A brief summary of my argument... Lots of progress has been made in DEI over the past 5-10 years. Where historically our organisations have resembled a 'punnets of plums' (😳), we've recently seen different and diverse fruits being added to the fruit bowl. Success! But it's not enough to just have different fruits in the bowl, if we don't all get to taste their flavours. We hear from too many diverse leaders that they've got their seat at the table, but that they're adjusting their voice to fit in with those around them. We have too many pineapples, trying to pretend they're plum, plum, plum. When this is the case, we have diversity only in appearance, but lack diversity of thought and, critically, diversity of VOICE. I went on to argue that the leader's role in DEI 2.0 is to create a culture of Debate, Engagement and Innovation, so that these voices are heard and so that we benefit from the right insights and critique they can provide. How do we do that? That's the tricky bit, that we're working with our clients on. Broadly, we need a mindset shift for leaders, so that they focus a little less on doing and a little more on being the container; the fruit bowl, to hold all those flavoursome and diverse fruits. The leader as a container is responsible for making space for Debate, to actively Engage those different voices and to allow Innovation to spring forwards and be acted upon. And the 'fruit' / contributor has a role to, in making sure we are courageous in using our voices. This is a HUGE topic which also has a tonne of academic insight behind it (see Kate Barker for a summary!) and I'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas and critiques on the subject to help me build my thinking. I am thrilled to be a part of the Fortune Most Powerful Women community and the conference that kicked off today in Laguna, Niguel. This year’s theme is Rising to the Occasion and these women are doing just that. Below are some highlights from today: Session: Why the Stories We Tell Matter hosted by Suzanne Kounkel at Deloitte Lisa McKnight; Mattel, Inc., Campbell Brown; Meta, and LeMia Jenkins Thompson; Pinterest discussed the how they each uniquely unified and built stories at their respective companies through values driven leadership and a commitment to purpose, as well as the importance of being intentional with personal, internal and external communication. “Post and engage constantly. Pick the three things you are going to stand for and tell the same story consistently over and over. You can’t overdo it.” Campbell Brown “CEO and Executive storytelling are a must. People don’t understand their own stories because they are living in it. Stories must be consistent. Session: Diversifying the Investment Game hosted by TPG and moderated by Mallun Yen from Operator Collective 🔆. In addition to learning how institutional investors, including Bank of America Securities, are earmarking multiple billions of dollars to support diverse funds, there was a rich discussion in the role diversity will play with the implementation and adoption of AI. If corporations largely incorporate AI, they will all run on the same models lacking creativity. Diversity of thought will shuffle the data and increase creativity, creating a competitive advantage. The future of successful AI companies will be led by SME’s creating exceptional service organizations, not technologists. AI is a human business, requiring diversity. #FortuneMPW #fortune #leadership #broadsheet #ypo #ai

Over the past few months, I've consciously been working on taking in a moment of daily gratitude. Today's moment was more professional in nature - appreciation working for a company that invests in our people; today #shell hosted an internal women in tech conference, bringing together leaders - focusing on the theme of 'Empowering the Future'. I had the opportunity to facilitate a dialogue with #salesforce & #pwc on IT trends we are seeing within the Energy sector. We had a great conversation on technologies like GenerativeAI, however the fact remains that 88% of executives struggle to capture value from their technology investments. Stressing the importance of not just technology; but acknowledging value comes from adoption and change management. I was inspired by our closing Keynote and friend/mentor Amy Suhl, MBA, CIO who concluded with some key take aways: 1. Ask for what you need - generally most people will say 'yes' 2. Give your boss feedback "If you & I always agree, they don't need us both' 3. Know how the business makes money - this will help you make better commercial decision

This week is the Colorado Technology Association ‘s Women in Tech Conference! I am super excited because Lumen Technologies CEO Kate Johnson will be presenting!!! I’m not telling you how many applications and roles I’ve applied for with them, but it’s been a bit more than any other company! It is always super exciting when I see women step up into the realms of CEO for a Fortune 500. She has not only taken the helm, but she is leading with empathy, passion, transparency and courage! She has brought Brené Brown in to consult and it’s amazing to hear about how the culture is shifting in a wonderful direction. I recently listened to Jacob Morgan interview her on his Great Leadership podcast (Link in the comments!), and she talked about a ride along she did with one of the field techs (definitely a bucket list item for me!). Hearing CEOs step into the shoes of their individual contributors is so important, then hearing what impact it made and what changes they will be making afterwards is just as important! Happy International Women's Day!   I had the privilege of attending Athena STEM Women's event last night InnovateHER: Female Tech Leaders Crossing the Finish Line Powered by Intuit. We heard from 3 phenomenal women, Lena Hall, Heidi Yang, and Debbie Day, who inspired us with their interesting stories and invaluable advice.  Here are some of my takeaways:   1. Getting in good trouble is necessary. Encouraged by the late John Lewis, Lena pointed out that we need to embrace this concept and think outside of the box and challenge the status quo to create meaningful impact. 2. You can make a significant change without being loud.  Heidi's story reinforced this, serving as a reminder that we don't need to compromise our core selves. Quiet determination and thoughtful actions can also bring about substantial change. 3. Lead with authenticity, not fear. Using honesty, transparency, and one's values will encourage a leadership style that inspires trust and fosters a positive and inclusive work environment. When thinking back at the qualities of my previous bosses and mentors, I valued their authenticity over anything else. 4. Used correctly, AI will aid humans rather than replace them. Hearing Debbie say this out loud definitely brought a level of comfort to me on a topic that I am sure seems daunting to a lot of us. I look forward to learning more about how AI can aid in making me a better toxicologist. #InternationalWomensDay
