[📣 Statement] Aerospace Technology Leaders Call for Expanding Research on Non-CO2 Emissions The chief technology officers of Boeing, Airbus, Dassault Aviation, GE Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, RTX and Safran have called for government research programs that enhance scientific understanding of aviation non-CO2 effects such as contrails, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur, aerosols and soot. The technology leaders released a joint statement at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow emphasizing the importance of accelerating efforts critical to understanding and reducing aviation’s non-CO2 effects. The aerospace industry actively works to improve the understanding of non-CO2 emissions in collaboration with research institutions, universities and other stakeholders. 📢 Recently hosted the final review meeting of the #CleanSky2 Engines Integrated Technology Demonstrator (ITD). 🔙 This collaborative endeavor began in 2014, uniting 22 entities from industry, research organisations, and universities across 12 European countries. Good round-up by Jonathan Hemmerdinger at FlightGlobal of test progress for the CFM International (CFM) RISE open-fan engine. GE Aerospace engineering VP Mohammed Ali says that testing by CFM partner Safran shows the design will deliver “significant fuel-burn improvement” and be more durable. Ali adds that conventional turbofan architecture could only be 20% more efficient if its core burned at “half the temperature of the sun’s surface”. In the last decade, more attention has been paid to the design of greener aero engines. One of the goals of Avio Aero is to reduce the impact of jet engines and thus contribute to re-build a greener world. To achieve this important objective, aeronautical companies are working to design newer key components leveraging advanced simulation processes that are powered with the ultimate #HPC technology permit to produce more precise and reliable results. The ACROSS project gives to Avio Aero and partners the opportunity to exploit the most advanced technology in the HPC area and, thanks to it, overcome the limitation of the current design process bringing more accurate simulation. https://lnkd.in/dWHX9qgn

Their focus on certifying next-gen systems ensures these solutions meet global aviation standards. 🧪 Material Testing at Cryogenic Temperatures – Critical work is being done to test and validate materials that can operate at -253°C, with staged cooling and advanced monitoring systems like Optic Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. 🌍 Sustainable Innovation – The integration of solar power with their Energy to Propulsion Test Facility ensures sustainability is at the core of their hydrogen-electric initiatives.
