What a start.. My impressions of the Institute for Developing Across Differences (IDD) Learning Labs and Community week so far: traveling to Groeningen and the first evening program. Last nights expert panel was fantastic. Pondering some of the most critical questions in our diversity, equity and inclusion work today: 🔵 Is doing 'something' in the DEI work better then doing nothing? And when is it not? 🔴 In times of backlash is being creative about doing the work ‘undercover’ risking being potentially deceiving - justified ? Much food for thought resulting from the different views shared as the faculty engaged in a conversation. Some key points that stuck with me: 💡the work is of developmental nature and so from that perspective taking even small steps that lead to the next - as long as we are clear on the big picture ourcome - is worth it - by Milton J. Bennett 💡self reflection that we may be guilty of provoking the backlash ourselves, and 💡an invitation to - whatever we choose to do next - do it inclusively also of voices that might be opposing (as difficult as it is) - by Maja Nenadovic, PhD So good to be back here for the 2nd year. Enforcer Mindset vs Mentor mindset. A structure most of us parents use with varying degrees. But it also depends on how we were raised, where are values were formed and how we view parenting. In the book 10 to 25, The Science of Motivating Young People by David Yeager, the theory of inclusivity in education has been explained with such sensitivity. While the demands of any program should have high standards, to be inclusive it must be supportive. Will we see a decline in DEI programs or a change in their designs with a major tech giant removing the role of Chief Diversity Officer? Highly recommend reading the book for not just parents and people who work with this age bracket, but managers in offices, project heads, coaches and community workers. No surprise that's it's been praised by Angela Duckworth (Author of Grit) and Adam Grant, among others. #books #grit #youth #mindset #education #teachers #humanresources

Very often we associate learning with growth and development, but I am curious: what is something you had to UNLEARN for the sake of your growth and development? Minoritized people are often taught to see themselves through the lens of the majority culture—one that prioritizes certain norms, behaviors, and values as the standard. Dominant culture often offers a perspective of minority communities imposes limitations on how minoritized individuals perceive their potential, value, and even the very essence of who they are - it minoritizes them. The process of unlearning was a critical aspect of my own identity development and shifted the way I saw myself, interacted with the world, and showed up in my work. For me this looked like: 1. Recognizing Internalized Beliefs: Understanding that societal biases aren’t inherent truths but constructs that benefit the majority. 2. Reclaiming Identity: Exploring aspects of myself that were previously suppressed, like cultural practices or personal expression. 3. Affirming Self-Worth: Accepting my identity as valuable, which helped challenge limitations placed on me. 4. Leading with Identity: Living authentically and advocating for change, creating space for others to learn and grow. 5. Contributing to Collective Unlearning: Inspiring others, both within their community and in the broader society, to rethink assumptions and embrace inclusivity. What has this looked like for you? This episode argues that inclusive education must move beyond simply accommodating neurodivergent students. Here, I criticise the current focus on having neurodivergent students adapt to the norms of the neuro-majority, arguing this reinforces ableist assumptions. Instead, I assert that inclusion should be a two-way street where neuro-majority students learn about and respect neurodivergent communication styles, such as GLP, which involves processing information holistically rather than linearly. This involves understanding the strengths and differences in how neurodivergent individuals communicate and interact with the world. The source article proposes teaching everyone about these differences to foster mutual understanding and adaptation, ultimately creating a truly supportive and empathetic learning environment for all.

It’s a call to action for us to broaden our perspectives and embrace all forms of intelligence and creativity. 🤝 Empathy and Belongingness: The character of the teacher in the film teaches us the importance of empathy—how understanding someone else's struggles can lead to profound change. When we foster a sense of belonging, we empower individuals to thrive, both personally and professionally. We had the privilege of hosting this month's mentorship webinar, which explored the significant influence of women in shaping the future of the next generation. We express our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed guest speaker, the CEO of Graith Spring Global Academy, as well as the incredible attendees who made the event truly engaging. Here are some key takeaways worth remembering from our enlightening discussion: 1. Build a strong relationship with children through humility, intentionality, and conscious effort. 2. Be vulnerable and open about your own day and experiences, showing that you're not perfect. 3. Communicate openly with children and share your feelings with them. 4. Discuss expectations and the impact of their actions on your reaction. 5. Encourage children to develop skills beyond just academics. 6. Model positive behavior and values you want to instill in children. 7. Empower children to express themselves and learn from their mistakes. 8. Avoid sending mixed messages by aligning words with actions. 9. Trust children with tasks and information, and allow them room for growth and self-expression.
