#NationalCrimeVictimsRightsWeek2024 Keep in mind, each person has a part to play in supporting survivors of crime in Williams County. While you don’t need to possess all the answers or hold formal advocacy training, having fundamental guidelines and tips will greatly contribute to making a positive impact on a survivor’s journey to recovery and avoiding unintended harm. Victimization is more common than you might realize. Every day, you encounter survivors, whether you’re aware of them or not. You never know when the moment will arise that one of them will need your help. Here are some additional suggestions: empower the survivor to make their own decisions; refrain from pressuring them into a specific choice or advocating for a particular option. Only touch the survivor if granted permission to do so. Assist the survivor in preserving evidence if they desire and if applicable. Prioritize the survivor’s emotions over your own and maintain focus on their needs. Refrain from making promises to the survivor and avoid sharing incorrect information; it’s better to admit uncertainty and offer to find out. Have confidence in your ability to provide a compassionate response to the survivor; you don’t need to know everything, rely on your empathy and common sense. You’ve got this! April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month — a time for communities and organizations across the nation to elevate the importance of creating systems, programs, and policies that support child victims of abuse. According to the National Children’s Alliance, more than 600,000 children are abused in the U.S. each year — and this is only what is reported. Nearly two-thirds of all cases handled by Child Advocacy Centers (CAC) involve child sexual abuse. Child abuse and neglect is preventable and requires a shared responsibility of collective action on all fronts. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. What is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive, controlling behavior that can include physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, or financial abuse (using money and financial tools to exert control). This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone. Turning Points Network's mission is to enhance the safety and well-being of victims and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and stalking through empowerment and advocacy; to create a community responsive to all victims and survivors through education, outreach and accountability; and to empower the community to establish a safer culture. Direct services include a 24-hour crisis and support line, shelter, safe housing, case management, court advocacy, safety planning, transportation, peer counseling, support groups, personal advocacy, economic independence training, transitional housing services, information and referral, and emergency childcare. TPN works with individuals and their families in Sullivan County, NH each year and services are open to all, regardless of income. All services are free of charge. These efforts not only raise public awareness but also urge lawmakers to take decisive action to prevent and address all forms of violence. To get involved, consider educating your community to advocate for survivors or using your social media platform to spread awareness. Attend educational events and workshops to deepen your understanding of the issues and discover ways to support survivors. By uniting and advocating for change, we can build a safer, more compassionate world for all. Despite Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) serving many more victims of child sexual abuse than child physical abuse, federal data show the latter is far more common, potentially indicating CACs without a specialized response to physical abuse may be unequipped to serve a large population of child victims of abuse within their jurisdictions. The theme of Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2024 is “STEP FORWARD. Prevent. Report. Advocate.” The STEP FORWARD campaign is a call to action for all individuals to use their personal and collective strength to advance meaningful change in preventing and responding to sexual violence. In 2023, SAPRO introduced Phase 1 of the STEP FORWARD campaign to increase awareness of sexual assault and resources to enhance response. As Phase 2 launches in 2024, we strive to change harmful behaviors, provide support to victims of sexual assault, and encourage sexual assault prevention initiatives year-round. We ask that you join us in taking a STEP FORWARD by highlighting acts that bolster prevention, increase reporting, and promote advocacy for a safer DoD community.

In Trauma & Recovery, Judith Herman describes the 3 stages of recovery as “establishing safety, reconstructing the trauma story, and restoring the connection between survivors and their community.” Domestic violence advocacy work is woven into all 3 stages. An example: - shelters & planning for safety - talking through the power & control wheel to deconstruct the abuse patterns - support groups where safe community begins to re-establish Every survivor deserves an advocate.
