Sleep disorders affect more than our cognitive function the next day. And yet, I have a huge issue with this 'advise' by the CDC. A link in this article takes you to a page that has 'CDC recommended number of hours sleep' a person should get every night based on their age. While it is true that, in general, a person who is 70 needs less sleep than someone who is 30, the reason why and the number of hours will vary per person. For those struggling with sleep anxiety, prescriptive sleep duration recommendations can indeed add to their stress, making it harder to achieve restful sleep. It's important to address the root causes of anxiety and work towards a more flexible understanding of sleep health. Some individuals thrive on less sleep, while others may require more to function at their best. It's crucial to listen to one's body and adapt to its natural rhythms rather than adhere strictly to generalized guidelines. Holistic Approach to Sleep: Encouraging a holistic approach to sleep that includes managing stress, practicing good sleep hygiene, and addressing any underlying health issues can be more effective than focusing solely on sleep duration. Coffee-Half-Life Awareness: The concept of "half-life" refers to the amount of time it takes for the concentration of a substance in the body to be reduced by half. For caffeine, this half-life averages around 5 to 6 hours in adults, although it can vary significantly among individuals due to factors such as age, liver function, pregnancy, and the use of certain medications. This means if you consume a cup of coffee with about 95 mg of caffeine (the average amount in a standard cup) at 3 p.m., approximately 47.5 mg of that caffeine could still be active in your system by 9 p.m., and about 23.75 mg could remain by 3 a.m. This residual caffeine can continue to exert stimulating effects on the central nervous system, affecting sleep cycles. Given the half-life of caffeine, consuming it later in the day can be particularly disruptive to sleep. The effects include: Difficulty Initiating Sleep: The presence of caffeine can make it harder to fall asleep due to its stimulatory effects on the brain. Reduced Deep Sleep: Even after falling asleep, the quality of sleep can be compromised, with reductions in both the duration and depth of deep sleep. Deep sleep is crucial for restorative processes, and its reduction can affect physical recovery and cognitive function. Altered Sleep Architecture: Caffeine can alter the normal progression through the sleep stages, potentially leading to more awakenings or lighter sleep stages throughout the night.
