Technical.ly released its inaugural State of the Philadelphia Tech Economy Report, which was made possible by support from the City of Philadelphia Department of Commerce, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Morgan Lewis, the Penn Center for Innovation and Silicon Valley Bank. According to the report, Penn ranked within the top five largest research & development expenditures of US universities in 2021 and Philadelphia’s Tech Ecosystem Value from 2020-2022 was one of the highest in the nation. The report also highlights how Penn’s Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine for their contributions covid-19 vaccines and showcases how Penn affiliated startups attracted over $1 billion in investment capital in 2023, its all-time high. Additionally, Penn startups Baleena and ToxiSense were recognized as Runner Ups for Technical.ly’s 2023 RealLIST of startups, which names the most promising Philly Tech companies. Pennovation Works’ Managing Director Denita L. 🚀🔗 When experts in technology transfer, founders, and investors get together to discuss how to facilitate successful technology transfer from academic research institutions to startups! 💡   Partners from technology transfer offices of Universität Heidelberg (#hei_INNOVATION, ScienceValue Heidelberg GmbH), DKFZ Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum and EMBL Enterprise Management Technology Transfer GmbH (#EMBLEM) as well as experienced founders, investors and ecosystem representatives (BioRN Life Science Cluster Rhine-Neckar and Heidelberg Startup Partners e.V.) met in Heidelberg to enter into a lively discussion on the challenges startups face when trying to secure access to Intellectual property owned by their research institution.    Here's a quick rundown of some key takeaways:   Agile Implementation: Speed is essential for success of startups. Thus, academic research institutions need to commit to an “enabling” culture by implementing standardized and digitalized administrative processes to enhance technology transfer efficiency. Showcasing Role Models: Embracing the lessons gained from both successes and failures there is a need to spotlight inspiring role models and amplify their visibility for aspiring entrepreneurs. Transparency and communication: Startups and technology transfer offices often describe contract negotiations with each other as a non-transparent process. Open Science and Biotech Startups Andy Tay's post in Nature, "The open-science movement for sharing laboratory materials gains momentum" made me think about how open science can align with the commercial goals of running a biotech startup. Open science, advocating for accessible research stages, is transforming scientific collaboration. This approach is not merely about sharing; it's a catalyst for transparency and accelerated scientific achievements. The intriguing aspect is how this openness blends with the profit-driven biotech startups. They can, in fact, coexist beautifully with a few conditions: • Open science should encourage collaborations, spurring discoveries. • There must be a focus on quality, vital for research integrity, trust and reliability. • Interests must be balanced such that legal frameworks can protect commercial interests while fostering open science. This will invite investments, leading to swift advancements.
