In June 2019, over 8 days and 72 hours of installation, Mckingtorch African along with 60 volunteers built a Commissioned Plastic Waste Segregation House made from 3160 plastic waste bottles. The structure had 5 windows, a door, and a roof and it can hold up to 600kg of plastic bottles. This house was made for Ghana International School (GIS). With this, the students and the school can segregate waste bottles over a long period and sell them to recycling companies or use them for environmental sustainability projects. This is better cos it is at the school car #bottlessegregationhouse #plasticwasteinnovation #beatplasticpollution #wastesegregationproject #GhanaInternationalSchool

Recently, Kenya was in the spotlight due to the INC (Inter-govt negotiation committee) process on Plastic Pollution .... But it was in late 2021/early 2022, I was grateful to have worked with Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd. to develop a multi-phase project leveraging their amazing work on the ground involving community based collection and sorting towards recycling to high value applications. While the issue of plastic waste in #africa is significant combined with local challenges such as lack of formal structures, currency devaluation, electricity shortages etc., i was struck by the raw energy and resilience of the disruptive innovators I met including Keiran Smith Karim Debabe It felt like home having grown up in a similar environment in South Asia myself. The challenges to build a scaled eco-system in such environments are not easy but this is where the work we do is so critical. I will be keeping a close-eye on how this project evolves in the coming years as this provides a solution model at scale in the Global South towards upcycling while uplifting lives and communities around it. This project (in a nutshell) will enable: 1. Scaling of their current collection of 50-80MT of plastic waste to 2500MT every month working with >2,000 aggregator partners (50x scale up!!!) 2. Building recycling infrastructure to cater to food contact applications for HDPE, PP and PET 3. Developing technical capabilities to customize 'recipes' according to bespoke customer requirements 4. Expanding crowd-sourcing of plastic waste to households through digital capabilities Nicholas Kolesch Martyn Tickner Philippe Montagné Can you share some scalable, best practices of plastic waste management in the Global South? #globalsouth #socialentrepreneurship #endplasticwaste #upcycling
Turning the spotlight on Kenya, where our project partner Mr Green Africa (MGA) is raising the bar in sustainable waste management. Through innovative incentives and community-based collection, MGA is collecting 50 to 80 metric tonnes of plastic waste every month. Over the next 3 years, MGA plans to enhance its recycling capabilities by expanding its collection network, developing food-grade conversion capacity, and more to tackle the challenge of hard-to-recycle plastic waste. Learn more about MGA’s mission to turn plastic waste into valuable materials and build a more circular future in the Global South in our carousel. #EndPlasticWaste #MrGreenAfrica

Kenya generates about 2.1 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, yet over 88% is not recycled ♻️. Instead, it ends up in water bodies (rivers) 🌊, causing significant environmental damage 🌍 and posing risks to aquatic life 🐠 and human health 🏥. To curb this, we must intentionally set up comprehensive waste management systems. This includes building and maintaining recycling facilities 🏗️, implementing effective waste collection and segregation processes 🚮, and promoting public awareness campaigns 📢 about the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal. Additionally, strict regulations ⚖️ must be enforced to ensure compliance and accountability across all sectors. We are all environmental stakeholders 🌱, and we are responsible for taking action. By working together, with the government, communities, businesses, and individuals 🤝, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future 🌿. Antony Makanga DICKSON ESAMAI Eboi E. This Global Recycling Day, CropLife Africa Middle East recognises the #RecyclingHeroes transforming empty agrochemical containers and farm plastics into sustainable solutions stewarding a greener agricultural future across sub-Saharan Africa. Through pioneering community partnerships between industry, research institutes and entrepreneurs, used pesticide packaging can get safely recycled or repurposed. However, a lot more remains to be done via appropriate legislative frameworks. These circular innovations not only prevent dangerous dumping, protecting people and ecosystems. But also create youth-run microbusinesses and skilled green jobs benefitting local economies through sustainable waste management models rooted in public and private collaboration. This Global Recycling Day, we applaud the people, places and innovative activities demonstrating agriculture’s immense potential as a recycling force for good. Your efforts to close the loop while closing social gaps inspire us to dream bigger and boldly build greener communities through strategic alliances.

Grateful for the insights gained at the Sustainable Packaging Summit! A big thank you to the exceptional speakers who shed light on crucial topics like Waste Management, Circular Economy, and Climate Change. Did you know that, despite efforts to use recyclable plastic packaging, many countries lack the necessary infrastructure for recycling? It's a global concern that hits close to home - researchers discovered a shocking 40kg of plastic in a cow's stomach in Kenya. Even amidst these challenges, Europe, as a leader in sustainability, is forging ahead. A new regulation, common to all member countries, is in the works: the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). It's a testament to our collective commitment to addressing these pressing issues. Let's stay informed and engaged with RegASK™! Together, we can make strides towards a more sustainable and responsible future. ♻️🌍 #SustainablePackaging #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction #PPWR #SustainabilitySummit

Through The SMEP Programme, the Flipflopi Project has established a plastic waste management system currently reaching 70% of Lamu archipelago’s population, where we collect and handle recyclable plastics within a circular economy model. From the plastic waste, we produce traditional furniture and artisanal boats, preserving heritage craftsmanship and generating economic opportunities. However, hard to recycle and low-quality plastic products and packaging are on the rise due to their affordability, and compound the challenge of disparate waste management systems. The complexity of the problem requires a systemic approach that tackle’s the issue from every angle. Together with ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna we believe effective legislation that is regional in approach provides a critical step forward in enabling the transition to a circular economy. The Draft Bill calling for an end to specific unnecessary SUPs within the East African Community is gaining ground after convening members of parliament from 7 East African countries who were in unanimous agreement for a regional approach. Have you ever wondered where your daily waste goes? As a new UNODC report highlights, a lot of our #waste in Europe still ends up in Southeast Asia. What's even more concerning: 15 to 30% of these waste shipments are #illegal. Once this trash is illegally disposed of, it has a major impact on our environment and health. Yuyun Ismawati Drwiega shared stories with me about Indonesian villagers living near dumping sites. They often develop respiratory, stomach diseases, or even cancer from the smoke of burnt plastic and toxic food, and are forced to leave their homes. Apart from its detrimental effects on health, ecosystems, and biodiversity, illegal waste trade exacerbates the challenges of climate change and undermines the circular economy. So what can be done to stop waste trafficking? My latest for Deutsche Welle. https://lnkd.in/d5-_yk5U
