Researchers from the University of Warwick have observed signs of the rainbow-like ‘glory lights’ effect on a distant planet outside our Solar System for the first time. Glory lights are colourful concentric rings of light that occur only under peculiar conditions. Why are #exoplanets with around 2 #Earth radii relatively rare? Simulations by scientists from MPIA, Universität Bern, and Université de Genève found migrating icy planets to play a key role in explaining this phenomenon. Above active regions there are long, horizontal fibrils that connect sunspots or plage of opposity polarity. We can also see dynamic fibrils, which are shorter, more vertical and much more dynamical.   🔁 📹 This movie shows a spectral scan of the quiet Sun across the H-alpha line. Positions in the far line wings sample the photosphere. The periodic, Halley-type comet will reach its next perihelion or closest approach to the Sun on June 30 and has become a target for binocular viewing low in planet Earth's northern hemisphere night skies. But this sharp telescopic image of 13P is composed of stacked exposures made on the night of June 25. It easily reveals shifting details in the bright comet's torn and tattered ion tail buffeted by the wind from an active Sun, along with a broad, fanned-out dust tail and slightly greenish coma. These dots and light bridges in the umbra and penumbra reveal smaller convection signs, observed at high spatial resolution as bright spots in the dark umbra.   👉🏻 The figure displays, from top to bottom, continuum intensity images, velocity maps from spectral profiles, and net circular polarisation maps showing magnetic field and velocity gradients along the line of sight.
