The FALSE Hope or perception that new major resource projects or boom would deliver economic growth need to be seriously addressed.
The most recent being the PNG LNG where there was too much political fan fare and chest beating, yet after production commenced, we hardly see real benefits flowing into the economy, let alone LOs.
GoPNG seriously need to come up with a deliverable Economic Diversification Policy that focuses on Agriculture and the SME Sectors in order to achieve a more sustainable economic growth rather than the rollercoaster experience that is usually associated with project construction booms.
Currently, the economy is extremely debt ridden and in a sluggish state despite hosting three (3) world class gold mines, one (1) world class LNG Project and one (1) world class Nickel Mine.
So what are we expecting Papua LNG to resolve? Is it going to be another PNG LNG since we are now going to the Chinese to fund our equity in the Project? Another UBS gate on the horizon?
Yet the biggest question still remains: "Will GoPNG continue to seek loan after loan to purchase its equity in every project and remain trapped?
One of the best options is GoPNG seriously needs to amend the existing Resource Laws and Agreements before they talk about new projects. Otherwise, developers will be the outright winners while GoPNG goes globetrotting to fund its equity in its own resources and remain debt ridden.
In a nutshell, sustainable economic growth will only be achieved through economic diversification strategy and not through new projects that are still based on the existing resource laws and agreements as experience has proven so far.
