The puzzle pieces of bidirectional power flow are falling into place. On March 22, dcbel and other energy stakeholders and partners gathered in Oakland, California for the inaugural Vehicle-Grid-Integration (#VGI) Forum to discuss how to tap into EV energy. One thing is clear: the potential is enormous and on its way to being realized. More and more EVs are capable of #bidirectional charging. #BMW recently announced that its Neue Klasse models slated for 2025 will be vehicle-to-home, vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-load capable. Just a few days later, #Nissan, a bidi pioneer thanks to the Leaf, unveiled an EV-centered business plan that will see 16 new EV models hit the roads within the next three years. > https://lnkd.in/gE5McQzX [BMW Group] > https://lnkd.in/ghC4WjuD [Nissan Motor Corporation]   But real VGI requires more than just plugging in your EV. It needs coordination between utilities and consumers, and a plan for how to manage the new two-way flow of energy. And it’s essential that bidirectional charging be part of a smart home energy system that knows exactly when to charge a vehicle and when to send its energy to the home or grid. That’s what dcbel is focused on doing. In January, the California Energy Commission awarded us a $52M+ grant to subsidize the installation of our Home Energy Station, Ara, in low-income homes across the state. It’s helped us make “early inroads and a big splash,” in the words of Electric Autonomy. > https://lnkd.in/evKWMsmF [John Lorinc | Electric Autonomy]   And it’s why we attended the VGI Forum in California, which centered discussions around reforming retail rates and demand flexibility programs, technology enablement, and planning. “The opportunity to improve current grid performance and reduce grid buildout spending is at hand with bidirectional use of EVs,” said Dan Fletcher, our Head of Ecosystems, after attending the forum. We're excited to be at the forefront of the EV/grid services market in a state that's leading the charge.

Exciting developments in Quebec show that using EV batteries for power during outages or to save on electricity costs during peak demand is becoming a reality. Charger availability, and the knowledge you won’t have to wait in line is a key factor for EV drivers selecting a location for on-the-go charging. Providing more plugs in an efficient and economical way is essential. Mercedes-Benz HPC North America, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and MN8 Energy, launching a network of premium electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across North America, inaugurated its first Mercedes-Benz Charging Hub, located at the headquarters of Mercedes-Benz USA in Sandy Springs, Georgia. With the launch of the Mercedes-Benz Charging Network, Mercedes-Benz sets a new standard for fast, convenient, clean and reliable EV charging, while promoting EV adoption by expanding the North American public charging map for all brand of EVs. This inaugural charging hub is the first step in Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to invest over $1 billion, in a joint venture with MN8 Energy, to deliver 2,500 chargers within at least 400 charging hubs across North America by the end of the decade. The inaugural charging hub at the Mercedes-Benz USA headquarters represents a benchmark for standalone charging hubs. Special features include: 400kW Chargers, The first chargers installed are provided by ChargePoint and are all capable of charging rates of up to 400kW, offering customers some of the fastest charging speeds in the industry. Open to all from day one: Drivers of EVs from any brand can charge their vehicle and enjoy a Mercedes-Benz brand commensurate experience. Charging lounge: Charging hub customers can enjoy a premium, clean and comfortable environment while their vehicle charges, complete with couches and lounge chairs, vending machines, refreshments, and restroom facilities. Solar Canopy: Provides weather cover for customers, overhead LED lighting for safety and solar panels on top to generate passive clean electricity. Intelligent Indicators: A pylon built to a height of 15 feet, visible from the street, indicates the status of the charging stall: in use, free or reserved. Accessibility: The charging hub includes one charging spot, closest to the charging lounge, designed especially for handicap accessible vehicles, as well as one uncovered, drive-through charging spot that is designed for electric vans or EVs with trailers up to 26 feet in length. Powered by clean energy: Through both direct and indirect means, the charging hub uses renewable energy and is carbon neutral. #electricvehicles #zeroemissions
