This February, we're celebrating Black History Month. It's a special time to recognize the profound impact Black Americans have on our society, culture, and history. In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson first instituted "Negro History Week," aligning it with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Its purpose was to raise awareness of the often-overlooked achievements Black Americans have made from mainstream historical narratives. initiative aimed to encourage the coordinated teaching of the history of American Blacks in the nation's public schools, a radical idea at the time that sought to challenge the underrepresentation of Black Americans in the country's history. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month urging Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since then, Black History Month has been a time for all Americans to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and history of African Americans.

Empowering Social Impact through Innovative Marketing | Founder @ Black Digital | Champion for Creatives of Color
The team at Black Digital has been working hard to launch our first #BlackHistoryMonth toolkit. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/edpMnfV6. While February is dedicated to honoring Black people's sacrifices and significant achievements, one month alone cannot nearly encompass their historic accomplishments and tribulations. We will update the page throughout the month with creative and messaging assets for organizations and individuals looking to thoughtfully join the celebration. Featured prominently in our Black History Month logo is the Black Star. It’s non-symmetrical make-up represents the diversity and perfect imperfections that make our culture unique. The stripes are synonymous with the American flag, but a Pan-African-inspired palette pays homage to our ancestors. This intersection of symbols signifies the impact of Black culture and ideology on the country today. Black History is American History. Join us as we celebrate Black culture, Black leadership, and, most importantly, Black joy. Always proud of the team: Creative: Lorenzo Gordon Miles Carney Annie-Dina Théodore Web: Willie Brown Content & Research: Dominique W. Talia Sabbath Liesel Allen

🖤Join us in celebrating Black History Month at the office! 🖤 Let's honor and recognize the countless contributions made by Black Americans throughout history. The history and experiences of Black people are an integral part of America's heritage and have shaped both our past and present. The criminal justice system has long been intertwined with the oppression of black people, from slavery to the mass incarceration we see today. As public defenders, we recognize the responsibility we hold in fighting for justice and equality for all. Black Americans face disparate treatment at every stage of the criminal process, from traffic stops to sentencing. We must remember that the U.S. Constitution, when written, excluded people of color, and racial discrimination was enforced by the courts. It is crucial for public defenders to understand this history of struggle to effectively advocate against injustice. Throughout history, people of all backgrounds have joined together to fight against injustice, and we must continue this legacy. Black history matters every day, not just in February. Together, we can work towards a more just and equal society.
