I attended the Plant Based World Expo Europe and, as a plant-based nutrition coach, here are my thoughts: - The majority of the companies present were selling meat substitutes and I have mixed feelings; clearly, these products are much better for the environment, leaving less of a carbon footprint and a solution to animal cruelty. But certain of these products tried to replicate the taste and texture. Some succeeded, which is impressive and bizarre for someone like me who has cut out meat and fish for health and environmental reasons and isn't after taste. - Which brings me to my second point: are these products better for our health? Since we're talking about a human creation rather than food, with the addition of emulsifiers, sweeteners and artificial flavourings, we have to ask ourselves whether these products are better for our health. One of the debates was whether we should go back to basics, i.e. put plant-based products and whole foods at the centre of our plates, and I completely agree with that. We're selling the taste and the price of the product, but not the health, because we're forgetting about nutrition. People associate plant-based foods with healthy foods. We should be educating people about what they are actually eating, reading the ingredients, giving them information so that they can make their own decisions. It’s because our American diet sucks and the ingredients that are allowed in our foods (in my opinion, and in the opinion of many others) are all set up on a governmental platform to allow healthy eating to be expensive and those who cannot afford those luxuries, can finance the healthcare industry.
