Preservation means managing, understanding, and valorizing cultural heritage. It's about studying the connections between objects, their history, the societies that made them, and where they are now. This is a key contribution CCR has made yesterday to Africa international roundtable.
🌍 International Roundtable: Africa, Culture, Dialogue In the context of the exhibition "Africa. The Forgotten Collections", Fondazione Santagata per l’Economia della Cultura collaborated with the DIREZIONE REGIONALE MUSEI PIEMONTE and the Musei Reali of Turin to create a #PublicProgram of collateral events aimed at promoting reflections on Africa and its cultural heritage. The culmination of this rich program will be the international #roundtable "Africa, Culture, Dialogue" – organized by Fondazione Santagata, in collaboration with ICCROM – taking place at the Einaudi Campus of the University of Turin, #today, March 20th, 2024. The event will feature prominent experts gathered to discuss the opportunities and challenges related to the conservation and promotion of African cultural heritage. The day’s proceedings will lead to the formulation of a shared #agenda for future cooperation to promote inter-institutional collaborations. The roundtable stands out as an extremely relevant event in the current context, not only for its crucial role in fuelling the debate on African cultural heritage but also for the #transformativeimpacts that it is set to generate internationally. Ciku Kimeria made a key observation that if one wants to see a wide array of African artifacts, their best bet is to apply for a Schengen or UK visa and catch a $1,000 flight from Africa to Europe or Britain, where the majority of Africa’s material cultural legacy is found. As much as 90% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s cultural artifacts are outside of the continent, according to a 2018 report commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron. A significant share is indeed housed in European and British museums. #ReturnAfricanheritageandartefactstoAfrica. African Culture Fund (ACF) Youth.Heritage.Africa. How would you display your country in an international exhibition? This question became a particularly salient one for new states as they sought to showcase their independent statehood to the rest of the world. The Israeli pavillion at Expo Montreal in 1967 became a renowned success. Designed under the leadership of pioneering architect Arieh Sharon, the pavillion included an exhibition area where one of the original Dead Sea Scrolls was put on display, a dark room describing the Holocaust and a bright room that described the birth of Israel. https://lnkd.in/dFMvVUms My forthcoming book chapter on the performative aspects of new statehood in international society will include this and other displays by new states. In the meantime, a quick question to my Turkish students: how would you display Turkey at an international expo?

Open Restitution Africa speaks to Prof. George Abungu, who exposes the flaws in the concept of a ‘universal museum.’ How can a museum be ‘universal’ when it’s tied to the laws and interests of its funders? It’s not about universality—it’s about control. These institutions emerged to benefit from the growing demand for repatriation, but their power only serves to reinforce colonial legacies. Watch the full episode to dive deeper into the excuses that continue to hinder true restitution.
