This week, as we kick off the celebration of #PrideMonth, Luminate honors the LGBTQ+ music makers whose unwavering dedication to their craft continues to shape the musical landscape and empower queer voices. Year over year, we see queer representation in the music industry increasing. In 2021, there were 35 solo artists ranked in the Top 1,000 who self-identified as LGBTQ+; so far in 2024, that number has increased to 39. Consumption of these artists similarly increased, from 17.9M units in 2021 to 20.8M units in 2023. At the genre level, Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop and Rock lead the way in queer representation, with the majority of these queer artists performing in one of those genres. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eGEb6E3i

Diving into the world of About Face Theatre's RE/GENERATION Studio was a game-changer for this musician who never imagined themselves directing a play. 🎵🎭 In December, I attended DND (Directors in Development), and let me tell you, those two hours were a spike of inspiration. 🌟 Immersed in the Unfamiliar: As someone whose comfort zone is usually found in music notes rather than script lines, the experience was unexpectedly transformative—never acted in a play? Check. Never read a play in a group? Double-check. Never thought about directing a play? Triple-check. Yet, there I was, feverishly taking notes, completely forgetting my background for a moment. 🤔 Reimagining Yourself: It got me thinking, who would you be if you could reimagine yourself for just two hours? 🤯 About Face Theatre provides you that space to explore, challenge, and redefine. 🎭 Spark Your Creativity: Their mission of advancing LGBTQ+ equity through community building, education, and performance is something I support. America is at a critical juncture when it comes to LGBTQ safety and support. At GLAAD, we know that fair and accurate representation in media and journalism have a powerful and measurable effect on the lives of LGBTQ people. While support for LGBTQ equality has reached an all-time high, allyship must turn into action. This June, media, content creators, and corporate leaders must lead and respond to hate with undeterred support for the LGBTQ community, including LGBTQ employees, shareholders and consumers and protect all that the LGBTQ movement has accomplished. https://lnkd.in/eZt3ccS6

On this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, we revisit our resource, "Tackling Homophobia in Sport." Launched in 2021, in partnership with Fare network . The resource covers essential terminologies, facts, and issues related to queer rights.  LGBTQ+ Film School Scholarship Scholarship Name: William Drown LGBTQ+ Film School Scholarship Purpose: To provide financial assistance and promote inclusivity in the film industry by supporting LGBTQ+ students who aspire to attend film school.Eligibility Criteria:Applicants must identify as LGBTQ+.Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited film school or film-related program.Passion for storytelling through film.Scholarship Amount: $10,000 (or an amount that aligns with available funding).Application Process:Applicants submit a short film (5-10 minutes) that reflects their unique perspective and LGBTQ+ identity.The film can be a narrative, documentary, animation, or experimental work.A panel of industry professionals and LGBTQ+ advocates will review the submissions.Selection Criteria:Creativity and originality.Artistic expression of LGBTQ+ experiences.Technical proficiency.Impact of the film on viewers.Deadline: Sept 15, 2024.Award Announcement:Winners will be notified via email.The winning film(s) will be showcased at an LGBTQ+ film festival or related event.
