HYPERTUNNEL RECEIVES GRANT TO BUILD UNDERPASS hyperTunnel has won UK government funding for railway innovations at the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence (GCRE). hyperTunnel’s underpass is one of 16 schemes that will be demonstrated at GCRE’s Dulais Valley site in South Wales this year. The underpass will demonstrate hyperTunnel’s swarm construction technique, which uses AI, digital surveying and swarm robotics to effectively 3D print a structure in the ground before any excavation takes place. The approach is designed to be faster and less expensive to deliver, and carry less risk, less disruption, less waste and a lower carbon footprint than current cut-and-cover construction techniques. The project aims to provide an economically viable alternative to hazardous level crossings, while improving safety, increasing rail capacity and avoiding inconvenience to road and rail users. hyperTunnel will build a 20m-long pedestrian-sized tunnel under a GCRE test track. The track will remain open throughout the construction process. The project is funded by the Department for Business and Trade through the competition GCRE: Railway Construction Innovation Phase 2 delivered by InnovateUK in collaboration with GCRE. In more than 120 years this engineering marvel has carried millions of people and... an elephant! 🐘 The remarkable suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany 🇩🇪 , is a stunning feat of engineering that was inaugurated in 1901. Its creator, Eugen Langen, proposed the idea of constructing a railway suspended over the river Wupper as a more convenient option to traveling on the congested roads of Wuppertal. The majority of the railway's route runs above the river Wupper, while other parts of the journey are elevated high above the bustling main roads. The cars are suspended from a single rail, which is positioned below a massive supporting steel frame consisting of 486 pillars and bridgework sections. At both ends of the route, specifically at the Oberbarmen and Vohwinkel stations, the two-car trains navigate through enclosed, tightly-curved tracks before re-emerging on the opposite platform. As automated vehicle testing progresses in Europe, particularly in Belgium, there is a growing focus on the necessary infrastructure. However, pavement design adjustments remain underexplored. Our latest studies addresses this gap, providing a foundation for preparing pavements to accommodate automated vehicles effectively.
