More than 90% of all materials extracted and used in industrial processes are wasted and applying circularity could abate 75% of embodied emissions from the built environment – according to the World Green Building Council and McKinsey reports. In fact, applying the circular economy to the building sector has the potential to yield an annual net profit gain of $31-46 billion by 2030 and $234-360 billion by 2050. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s continue to collaborate and accelerate building a more sustainable and circular world. I think sustainability is all about using resources wisely to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations. It’s about balancing what’s good for the environment, the economy, and people to create a better, more fair future. The construction process can be sustainable by using eco-friendly materials, creating energy-efficient designs, cutting down waste, getting green certifications such as LEED, and adding more green spaces. One of the sustainable practices I do is avoid single-use plastics by always bringing my reusable water bottle. Another habit I stick to is turning off lights and electronics when I’m not using them it’s an easy way to save energy. It's usually the small stuff that people don't pay attention to but can go a long way. #FIU_CM #FIUCM #BCN4570 #Sustainability #FIUConstructionManagement #ConstructionManagement #FIUMossschool #FIUsustainability

#LPMStudents the #BuiltEnvironment produces about 40% of global emissions #GHG so it is important that circular economies are used to help reach net zero by 2050. However, the built environment is not on target so much more needs to be done for it to be more sustainable. #Construction #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #BuiltEnvironment #Webinar

Transforming construction for a circular future 🌿 As we journey towards a climate-neutral Europe by 2050, the shift to a circular economy is more crucial than ever. It's with great pleasure that we introduce Julie Kjestrup, who will be one of the esteemed panellists at the highly anticipated event "The role of circularity in Europe’s green transition" organised by FORESIGHT Climate & Energy in partnership with ABB and VELUX, taking place on the 30th May, 2024 in Brussels. Register your attendance now: https://lnkd.in/egeCifMg Julie holds the pivotal role of Head of Policy and Thought Leadership at the VELUX Group. Her deep expertise in sustainable building practices and policy innovation makes her an invaluable contributor to our panel discussion on "Shifting to Circularity in the Built Environment." This session aims to tackle some of the most pressing questions facing the sector today: How can EU legislation be evolved to better promote circularity in construction? How can we better valorise "waste" for reuse through improved material recovery and storage practices? What are the major hurdles industry players face in moving towards circularity, and how can these be addressed? Join us for a dynamic conversation with Julie and other leading figures as we explore how Europe can embrace circularity to reduce waste, decrease emissions, and enhance overall sustainability. 🗓️ Mark your calendars! This discussion promises to offer groundbreaking insights into building a sustainable future. The panel will be recorded live for the FORESIGHT podcast Watt Matters. On the opportunity of circularity in the construction industry vol. 2 Over the past month I have met a number of awesome people working on all things circular. Thank you all who took the time! It has been very inspiring. My goal was (and still is) to get a better understanding of how different people see this, where the gaps are, and how we can contribute to a more circular economy. So what have I figured out so far? 💡 1. The people working on this are exceptional. I have yet to meet a more driven and passionate group. I can’t highlight this enough. 😊 2. Construction industry produces a lot of waste, 3,2M tons annually. That is five times more than Estonia produces packaging and household waste combined. 🗑 3. As is the case with our industry in general, circular push in our field is also quite fragmented. We could definitely use a more coordinated approach to this. 🤝 4. This might be a bit controversial but construction materials are too cheap. It is difficult to add value to reclaimed materials and still be cheaper or at least at the same price as new materials. I believe this can be achieved at scale but for that there needs to be at scale demand which should, at least in the beginning, come from the public sector. ⬆ 5. To end on a high note I have seen and heard about a number of exciting and innovative solutions coming up. For reference a cool way to repurpose unused/old concrete panels. So I believe the future is bright! ☝ What are your thoughts? What do you see as the biggest hurdle in the transition to a more circular economy? (If you don’t want to comment here but would like to discuss this still, DM me. I’m always up for a lunch or a quick Teams meeting) #construction #sustainability #circular #economy #esg
