Well, in case you haven't heard by now, a senior Pentagon official was busted for dogfighting. Frederick Douglass Moorefield and his barber buddy, Mario Flythe, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, fought #dogs for over 20 years, calling losing dogs "hoes" and electrocuting them with jumper cables. God only knows what they did to #cats, #kittens, rabbits and other #animals while training them. Out of curiosity, how much money do you think a "deputy chief information officer for command, control and communications for the Secretary of Defense’s Chief Information Officer" makes per year? But this 62-year-old man was willing to throw away a career at the Pentagon -- and his federal pension -- to fight dogs. *That* should tell you how bad the problem is. Thus far this year, police/feds have seized 730+ pitbulls from dogfighters. Last year, they seized 875+ pitbulls. Those are just the people who were caught. And yet, despite the fact dogfighting has been running rampant in this country since the '70s, you don't see HSUS, the ASPCA or Best Friends pressuring politicians to ban pitbull breeding; nor do you see them pressuring politicians to ban tethering. They aren't asking for flyovers, posting billboards or going into rural/urban communities to teach kids compassion either. Instead, they're pressuring politicians to not only repeal pitbull bans but to create state laws preventing cities like Girard, Ohio, from banning pitbulls. I have been part of the Scottish SPCA family for almost 19 years now and since I joined this amazing organisation back in 2005 together with brilliant colleagues and partners, that determination to stamp out animal abuse has never wavered. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to conduct research in partnership with Professor Jo Williams and the team at the University of Edinburgh. Our research has assessed the impact of animal welfare education and looked at ways to tackle that link between animal abuse and human violence leading to the publication of a variety of research papers (and book) and creation of the Scottish SPCA Animal Guardians programme. What is very clear is that we need to engage with our communities differently now compared to 19 years ago as the world around us continues to change. As a parent myself I see every day the impact and influence the online world has on my children. The release of the #AnimalKindnessIndex2024 as highlighted in the post below yet again brings to the forefront the issues that we need to tackle. 20% of adults in Scotland say they have seen animal cruelty online, and 31% of children surveyed in Scotland say that sharing animal cruelty online is becoming more common. These are worrying stats. The Online Safety Act 2023 provides the vehicle to tackle the issue of animal cruelty being viewed online. I commend Ofcom for taking the time to listen and for releasing their consultation today that looks to strengthen the draft illegal harms codes of practice and guidance under the Online Safety Act by specifying animal cruelty and human torture as types of content that platforms must tackle. Do you volunteer or work with shelter cats? If they don't already have a scratching option, Stretch and Scratch might be the answer! I donated a set of 50 to our local humane society so that our higher-need cats could have an energy outlet. Scratchers can't be reused with another cat, due to the risk of the transmission of diseases, and so DYI scratchers are obviously a more affordable option.
