Singapore and Malaysia are building the new “Shenzhen”: In an era of tariff wars and onshoring narratives, Regional Mega Hub is the right path. Why ? Infrastructure, labor availability, investments attraction, innovation readiness …Often one single country/region does not own ALL the ingredients for economic success recipe. Therefore it calls for meaningful alliances and scale effets to compensate the missing pieces. Most westerners are unfamiliar with the region of Johor, pretty much like two decades ago no one heard of Shenzhen which turned out to be the epicenter of manufacturing and innovation for China and beyond. Special mention for manufacturers reconfiguring your global #supplychain: Johor is already known for food processing industry with notable global players like Netslé, Danone… The right path is rarely the path of least resistance though — entrepreneurial determination and political vision do matter, especially at crossroads. Let’s remember this name for now and see for yourself five years down the road.

Malaysia and Singapore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). This initiative aims to enhance economic connectivity and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. According to the press release from the Government of Malaysia, the JS-SEZ will facilitate cross-border flows of goods and people, strengthen the business ecosystem, and support investments in various sectors, such as electrical and electronics, medical equipment, food manufacturing, and data centres. Foreign investors can benefit from the JS-SEZ in several ways, such as: • Enhanced Market Access: The JS-SEZ will cover an area of about 3,500 square kilometres, encompassing parts of Johor and Singapore, with a combined population of about 10 million people and an estimated gross domestic product of about US$400 billion. Foreign investors can tap into the demand and opportunities in both markets, leveraging existing trade and investment links between Malaysia and Singapore. • Preferential Policies and Incentives: The JS-SEZ will offer a conducive and competitive environment for businesses and investors, with streamlined regulations, simplified procedures, and attractive incentives. Both governments will work towards establishing a one-stop business/investment service centre in Johor, adopting digitised processes for cargo and people clearance, facilitating renewable energy cooperation, curating training and work-based learning initiatives, and developing joint promotion events. The JS-SEZ will also benefit from existing free trade agreements (FTAs) that Malaysia and Singapore have with other countries. • Complementary Strengths and Synergies: The JS-SEZ will enable foreign investors to capitalise on the complementary strengths and synergies of Johor and Singapore, such as their geographical proximity, cultural affinity, and sectoral specialisation. Johor offers a large land area, abundant natural resources, and low-cost labour, while Singapore provides highly developed infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and a strong innovation ecosystem. Investors can also benefit from existing industrial clusters and supply chains in the JS-SEZ, such as the Iskandar Malaysia development corridor in Johor and the Jurong Innovation District in Singapore. The announcement of a joint special economic zone (SEZ) between Malaysia and Singapore in Johor marks a significant step in strengthening cross-border economic ties. By focusing on key sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and energy, this initiative aims to attract high-value investments and create 20,000 skilled jobs within five years, which aligns well with both nations’ long-term economic goals. I believe this collaboration could serve as a model for other nations looking to strengthen economic ties and invest in shared infrastructure projects. It will be interesting to monitor how this project evolves, especially its impact on cross-border traffic and its potential to position the Johor region as a key economic hub in Southeast Asia. Serumpun Philosophy: A Path to Regional Cooperation in the Malaysia-Singapore SEZ The Malaysia-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ), linking Johor and Singapore, has sparked questions about its impact on Indonesia. Critics fear that the SEZ could divert investment and talent away from Indonesia, but such concerns overlook an opportunity for regional collaboration rooted in the Serumpun philosophy—emphasizing shared heritage and unity among neighboring nations. Instead of viewing the SEZ as a competitive threat, Indonesia could explore synergies with Malaysia and Singapore to bolster ASEAN’s collective economic strength. By leveraging its vast natural resources, competitive labor market, and strategic location, Indonesia can complement the SEZ’s focus on high-tech industries and advanced manufacturing. Through joint initiatives in trade, education, and technology, the three nations could establish a cooperative ecosystem that benefits the entire region Policies fostering cross-border collaboration, such as shared infrastructure and skill development programs, would strengthen ASEAN’s position globally Serumpun reminds us that shared prosperity is achievable when regional ties are deepened, transforming potential rivalry into enduring partnership for Southeast Asia’s future
