Q: How long have you been working for Thompson Arthur, and how long have you been working in construction? 🦺 29 years at Thompson Arthur, and I've been working in construction since I was 13 years old. Q: What do you like most about working at Thompson Arthur? 🦺 There are a lot of good people here. And the paycheck keeps the lights on. Q: What are some of the toughest challenges you've had at work? 🦺 On large jobsites, such as the one I am currently working on, it is sometimes difficult to be and stay productive with literally thousands of other workers on the jobsite. All while maintaining the specific requirements set by the customer. Q: What do you feel is a priority for our company? 🦺 Safety is number one, but after that we are focused on quality, experienced employees. Q: What is the best advice you could give a new hire at our company? 🦺 Have and keep a good attitude, put safety first, and be humble enough to take advantage of the opportunity you have been given to learn from the experienced employees around you and you will go far. Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be? 🦺 The ability to heal sick kids (cancer, etc.). Q: What is your favorite food? 🦺 Country fried steak with gravy and mashed potatoes. When we bought our first scaffold I was storing it at my Dad's house. - There was grass going all over it - It was just sitting there - Dad wasn’t happy There was one option. Rent it to the scaffolding installers that had helped us on a couple of jobs. Keep it out of my Dad's place. Win-win? Wrong. Thing was I didn’t really trust these guys. And I shouldn't have. They ended up doing a load of work for different builders. *Who we had recommended them to. They were charging them 10/15k for a job. BUT they would put the scaffolding up. And never go back to it. So we ended up getting left with all these builders. And all of these half finished projects. We had no choice but to take over the jobs. An expensive mistake. But guess what? We’re still working with some of those builders today. So be careful who you trust (or don’t). And embrace the opportunities that come from challenges head-on.

Did you know you don't need a qualification to call yourself an Oak Framer? Besides plumbers and electricians, this is true of most trades. A person can call themselves a member of whichever trade they wish, without an official qualification. 𝙸𝚂 𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁𝙴 𝙰 𝚃𝚁𝙰𝙳𝙴 𝙱𝙾𝙳𝚈? No, there is no trade body to protect the rights of people purchasing oak frames. 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙰𝙱𝙾𝚄𝚃 𝙱𝚄𝙸𝙻𝙳𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚃𝚁𝙾𝙻? Building Control checks that specifications are correct, but not the quality. They don't check that what was specified is what you get, only that the specs were right to begin with. 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝚀𝚄𝙰𝙻𝙸𝙵𝙸𝙲𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽𝚂 𝚂𝙷𝙾𝚄𝙻𝙳 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝙻𝙾𝙾𝙺 𝙵𝙾𝚁? You should look for qualifications that have third-party ratification. A credible carpentry qualification and a track record of producing frame buildings is ideal for an oak framer. For a manufacturer, ISO 9001 or an equivalent manufacturing certification.⁠ ⁠ It's worth noting that ISO 9001 is about the process, not the quality.⁠ The only third-party qualification we know of that currently certifies for quality and process is the BM TRADA Q-Mark. We are the only oak framer to hold a TRADA Q-Mark certification, meaning we are the only quality certified oak framer. It’s simple: the goal is to understand and learn everything connected to real estate—starting from how to build, buy, and sell, to how finance works. I want to thank everyone who has taught me something, from experienced realtors to electricians, plumbers, concrete pourers, painters, architects, carpenters, and finance experts. I started working when I was about 11 or 12 years old, and it wasn't an easy job. During the summer, when I was off school my friends would be riding their bikes to the park, or hanging out and playing NES, my father would wake me up at 6 a.m. and take me with him to a construction site. My father was a carpenter when I was born, and eventually started his own building company, which was named after me and my brother: Mark Rich Homes Ltd. (they definitely don't have a LinkedIn profile). It was for this company that I would drive to one of the sites with him and then work all day sweeping and cleaning out houses. Houses that were framed would need to be cleaned for the electricians, plumbers, and HVAC contractors. Once they were done, the houses would need to be cleaned and free of debris for the drywallers. Once they were done the houses would need to be cleaned for the painters, flooring, and kitchen installers. Finally, when they were done the houses would need to be cleaned for the new homeowners. It seemed to be a neverending amount of cleaning and it was tough work, that I hated at the time. The one perk was getting to operate all kinds of heavy machinery like bulldozers, forklifts, and excavators which was a lot of fun. I have since come to appreciate that my now strong work ethic is driven by the insight that even when faced with a daunting task (like cleaning an entire house that's filled with construction debris), you just need to start and it will get done. #JustStartWorking #ConstructionSiteLifeLessons #GrowWithRich
