The study published in Nature Communications demonstrates that the treatment duration for the SARS-CoV-2 inhibitor molnupiravir was not appropriate. A clinical trial, which monitored non-hospitalized participants receiving molnupiravir for 5 days after SARS-CoV-2 symptoms onset, revealed that the inhibitor accelerated viral load decline. However, in most cases, the virus remained detectable by day 5. Additionally, molnupiravir was associated with significantly higher viral persistence and significantly lower anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike antibody titers compared to patients receiving usual care. The efficacy of the JNJ-2113 peptide has been demonstrated in a phase 2b study led by researchers at The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. This makes it the first oral treatment that selectively blocks the IL-23 receptor, representing an improvement in the fight against moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. This receptor plays an essential role in the pathogenic activation of T lymphocytes in moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and underpins the inflammatory response in psoriasis and other dermatological and gastroenterological diseases.
