In the following excerpt, M.C. Sungaila describes her process in writing the abstract entitled Protecting Space Cultural Heritage: Lessons from the Holocaust Art Recovery Experience, which she presented at the 2024 International Symposium on Cultural Heritage in War and Peace: Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage through Past, Present and Future: “So I kind of went through the creative side to end up writing the very analytical side. It was a very different way in. You know, usually the creative is the illustration of the analysis but this way .. I think this is more like a feeling, like an intuition thing. So I needed to .. get into the art, the collages, think about these things and sort of have heart in it before I started writing. So [Manifestation of Freedom] was very helpful for me, very inspirational, and I love that piece. It really got me thinking about what are we doing with all of this .. for the next generation?” As discussed, M.C. was able to focus on the analytical work of the abstract once she engaged her creative side, developing several space-themed collages and viewing the Manifestation of Freedom music video, a sample of which is viewable here. As we enter the age of AI, we need to keep humans in the decision loop, maintaining their creative powers, and ensuring there is plenty of space for “individual meaning of life” and overall social wellbeing. We need to protect our right to exist in digital space.
