Our Consumer sector team are at GroceryAid's D&I in Grocery Live today! 💡 📢 Senda Kavindele and Amara Sharif will be presenting on our Black Lives Action Plan - reflecting on our key achievements and looking ahead to our ambitions for the future. We'll be covering top tips from our experience for wherever you are in your journey: ⭐ Kick-starting your journey: we know it's imperative to listen to those who are impacted or affected - not just acting upon our own feelings or assumptions. As a firm we heard from and reflected on the experience of our Black heritage colleagues and on 18 June 2020, we launched our Black Lives Action Plan. ⭐ On your journey: we felt it was important to ensure we weren’t just speaking in an echo chamber i.e. to those already involved, affected or needing support – we wanted our entire firm to be involved. An example of how we achieved this was by introducing mandatory IDE training designed to accelerate broader inclusion efforts and which included a focus on racial equity. ⭐ Advancing your journey: it is ok to acknowledge that we still have a lot of work to do - this spurs us on to help amplify the voices and experiences of our Black heritage colleagues and, importantly, continue to act on feedback we receive. Supporting black businesses during August and throughout the year is crucial to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the marketplace. Here are three tips on how to do it effectively ⤵️⤵️⤵️⤵️: Buy from Black-Owned Businesses: Make a conscious effort to patronize Black-owned businesses in your local community. By actively supporting these businesses, you contribute to their growth and success, helping to close the racial wealth gap and foster economic empowerment within the black community. Amplify Black Voices: Use your platform and social media presence to amplify and promote Black businesses. Use hashtags like #SupportBlackBusiness, #BuyBlack, and #BlackOwnedBusiness to raise awareness and encourage others to support these enterprises. By sharing their stories and achievements, you help create a wider audience for black businesses and contribute to a more inclusive economic landscape. Collaborate and Partner: Look for opportunities to partner with Black-owned businesses. Whether you're an individual, a company, or an organization, consider working together on projects, events, or initiatives. Collaborative efforts can create a win-win situation, fostering mutual growth and promoting diversity in your industry. Additionally, supporting Black-owned businesses through partnerships can lead to innovative and fresh perspectives, benefiting both parties involved. Remember that supporting black businesses should be a continuous effort beyond August. Cultivate an inclusivity habit and seek opportunities to uplift marginalized communities in everyday business and consumer practices. #SupportBlackBusiness #BuyBlack #BlackOwnedBusiness #BlackEconomicEmpowerment #DiversityandInclusion #CollaborateForGrowth #AmplifyBlackVoices #InclusiveBusinessPr

Last week at Buzzacott we took part in an informative webinar celebrating Black History Month, presented by Inclusive Employers and hosted by Inclusion & Diversity Consultant, Ruth-Anne Eghan, Assoc CIPD. I am so grateful to work at a firm where diversity and inclusion are perpetually in our conversations and where we regularly invite external thought leaders to educate and spread awareness on these important topics. Some key takeaways from the webinar included: ✅ The historical context of BHM – including The Colour Bar- an unofficial rule that kept racial segregation in the UK and took place in the mid-20th century. This discriminatory practice was enacted by landlords, employers, and organisations, prohibiting black people from taking up employment, finding affordable housing and even entering particular public premises. ✅ Misogynoir – which shows how sexism and racism manifest in Black women’s lives to create intersecting forms of oppression ✅ The importance of recognising your own bias – take the bias test to see where your own blind spots lie: https://lnkd.in/ePw4qdRS This conversation is so important to have among family, friends and colleagues, and we all have a way to go when it comes to understanding the intersections of discrimination and how we can strive to create a safer and more inclusive workplace, and society. Thank you again to Ruth-Anne Eghan, Assoc CIPD for the insightful session.

At NorthStar, we're proud to celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the priceless contributions of the Black community. This month, we're not only honoring the past but also committing to building a better future. Millions of people in the U.S. are underemployed after release from prison, and at the same time companies throughout the economy face an oncoming talent shortage. Working with companies to address bias and unnecessary hurdles can improve economic mobility, advance racial equity, and protect shareholder value. As part of our dedication to diversity and equality, we're thrilled to announce our continued support for Fair Chance Employment initiatives– the intentional recruitment of people with criminal records. Beyond Fair Chance Employment, NorthStar has been fighting for inclusion in the workplace through our shareholder proposals as well. Inclusion is the culture in which a mix of people can come to work, feel comfortable and confident to be themselves and work in a way that suits them and delivers your business or service needs. “Values, norms, conventions, shared beliefs, customs, traditions, symbols, rituals, knowledge, ideology, identities, and shared mental models" are examples of elements that make up corporate culture. We think that examining if and to what extent systemic racism is ingrained in the written and unwritten rules, corporate culture, and norms of the organization could contribute to long-term value development. By providing opportunities and breaking down these barriers in corporate culture, we can start to create a workplace where everyone can thrive. Join us in celebrating Black History Month and advocating for equality. Together, let's create a culture of empowerment and opportunity. #BlackHistoryMonth #FairChanceEmployment #DiversityandInclusion

As a black man, I have a lot of passion about the success of black professionals and diverse workplaces... Diverse workplaces are not just a trend but a necessity in today's globalized world. Here are 4 reasons why hiring more black professionals can benefit your organization: 1️⃣ Increased Innovation: Research shows that diverse teams bring a wider range of perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. By including more black professionals in your workforce, you foster an environment where creativity and innovation thrive. 2️⃣ Enhanced Problem-Solving: Different backgrounds often lead to different problem-solving approaches. By incorporating diverse voices, including those of black professionals, you gain access to unique insights that can help tackle complex challenges from multiple angles. 3️⃣ Broader Consumer Reach: Diverse teams better understand the needs and preferences of diverse markets. Hiring more black professionals allows your organization to connect with and engage customers from various racial backgrounds effectively. 4️⃣ Improved Reputation: Demonstrating commitment to diversity and inclusion not only attracts top talent but also enhances your brand reputation. By actively seeking out talented black professionals for key positions within your company, you show potential employees and consumers alike that diversity is valued at all levels. Embrace inclusivity by diversifying your team with talented black professionals – it's a win-win for everyone involved! #diversityandinclusion #blackprofessionals #BlacksInTech #BigBro #AfroTech2023
