A secret weapon in the fight against climate change lies beneath the waves as Pacific Island nations face rising sea levels, extreme weather events and coastal erosion. These marine ecosystems, known as blue carbon, have the remarkable ability to capture and store carbon dioxide. Now, Monash University Master of Environment and Sustainability student Megha Kezhakepuram Purushotham ( she/her) - in collaboration with Fiji National University A/Prof Shalini Singh - is exploring how this untapped resource can empower island nations. Read how Ms Purushotham's work for our Pacific Islands for Climate Transitions (PACT) research centre, will help blue carbon realise its full potential at https://lnkd.in/g24TqfqD #PACT #ClimateChange #BlueCarbon #Sustainability #ClimatePolicy #ClimateAction

"Climate change should not only be a topic in essays, art competitions, appealing stories, and speeches..." An interesting and refreshingly sober op-ed from 🇱🇰 on, among other things, the #security implications of #climate change by Charani Charithma Patabendige, which - to my surprise - also cites our good old GIZ study on the climate-security-#mobility nexus in the various African regions... https://lnkd.in/ecfsCEBS

#HumanFamily #ClimateChange #Durability This is an informative video by John Anderson AC, the honorable Former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, interviewing the economic expert Bjorn Lomborg about Climate Policy Cost-Benefit Analysis. Bjorn and his team at the Copenhagen Consensus Center have done great job on how to spend money most effectively and prioritization of economical investments. It is highly recommended to everyone interested in solving economical, socio-cultural and environmental issues, which are intertwined, we cannot intervene on one of them without influencing the others. Economic as defined by Lionel Robbins “the science which studies human behavior as a relationship between (given) ends and scarce means which have alternative uses”. Economic durability is the ability of an economy to continue to function over time and meet the needs of its citizens without depleting its natural resources or damaging its environment or destroying the cultures of our societies. This requires the responsible and efficient use of resources and the development of economic activities that are compatible with the carrying capacity of the environment. The point is: economic=+/-human behavior, so when we frame it unwiselly, we could be limiting #FreedomOfChoice and as a direct result, we are limiting #Freewill... 1/ By investing astronomical financial resources on CC, could it be that we are producing poverty on an unprecedented scale? 2/ How should we set prioritees to solve CC? Many scientists argue that Net-zero carbon dioxide emissions is not realistic and not necessary. They argue that the cure should not be worse than the disease and that correlation does not always mean causation. Should we dismiss their arguments and censore their opinions? If we do so, can we still be living in a free world? Do our values allow such behaviors? 3/ Is their a CC crisis? Since the climate of the earth is always changing and always will, it is impossible for the climate to be static, is the rate of change we are facing so problematic? 4/ The climate of planet earth is influenced by the activitees of the sun, by oceanic currents, by big astroids impacts, and by mega volcanic activitees etc. Should we add human activitees to the list? If yes, which activitees? 5/ CC is one problem in a big set of environmental problems, namely #EnvironmentalDegradation, which include desertification, biodiversity los, drainage of coastal wetlands, pollution of the air, waters, soil by human settlments especially mega cities due to condensed toxic waste etc. Everyone is talking only about one phenomena, which we can not stop, in the other hand we could & should do much about the rest of environmental degradation at the local, regional, national, continental levels and then the results will be global. Many proposed solutions to FIGHT CC are directly global, is this a wise approach of problem-solving? Is this a new scientific approach or a new dogmatic believe system?

🌍 🍎 We may not have been at Climate Week NYC 2024, but we’ve followed discussions closely—and here’s what stood out. 🤝 This year’s event, ending today, have spotlighted the critical role of non-government actors in helping solve for the climate and nature crisis we face. As Nigar Arpadarai, United Nations Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, told edie in an interview: "Non-Party actors are leading the charge and proving that ambitious climate action is possible, profitable, and popular." 🪸 A major theme was the mobilisation of capital for nature-based solutions, with a particular emphasis on marine restoration and #biodiversity #conservation. While these areas are essential for both planetary and human health, they often remain underfunded and overshadowed by carbon-focused efforts. With the UK’s vast #coastline, there’s massive potential for projects like oyster bed restoration—the kind of work our friends at Oyster Heaven are championing. As we build momentum toward #COP28, it’s clear that investing in nature isn’t just a side project—it’s central to climate resilience. Let’s keep the momentum going beyond Climate Week! 🌱 #GreatYellow #FinancingNature #Biodiversity #ClimateWeekNYC #RestoreNature #GreenFinance #Collaboration #NatureBasedSolutions #NBS #NatureRestoration #NatureFinance #Oysters #Marine #MarineMarket #NatureMarket #NaturalCapital #EcosystemServices #MarineRestoration

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 – 10 principles for developing sustainable communities Climate change is having severe consequences for communities that are designed for steady climatic conditions – not for the anticipated climate extremes. Data collected over the recent decades shows evidence that global climate impacts will severely worsen. This calls for innovative solutions for the adaptation of the built environment and the protection of communities. The stakeholders must coordinate and pool their expertise and resources to protect and develop resilient and sustainable communities for effective climate change action. These recommended 10 principles for effective action are directed to policymakers and other building sector stakeholders. ----------------------------- Pecunica (www.Pecunica.com) supports the BuildAction initiative for sustainable development and action. A recent study, co-authored by Conservation International's Chief Scientist Johan Rockström, sounds a critical alarm: we are nearing climate tipping points. These are thresholds beyond which changes to our environment could spiral out of control, much like leaning too far back in a chair and being unable to stop yourself from falling. This pivotal moment demands immediate and decisive action to mitigate irreversible damage to our planet. It is crucial that we utilize every available method to decarbonize. One critical part of the solution is nature itself, yet funding for nature-based solutions is woefully inadequate. Currently, nature conservation and restoration receives about $200 billion annually, significantly less than what is needed to implement these solutions at scale. We must increase investment in natural-based solutions, otherwise our climate goals are mathematically impossible to achieve. https://lnkd.in/eq4n6SSk
Climate tipping points are a major risk even if we hit Paris targets, study shows

I hope you took note of Earth Day last week. It was a good time to reflect on our relationship with the Earth, our dependency on it, and the need to love and care for it--all too often forgotten. The father of environmental economics Herman Daly once said, "The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment, not the reverse. We're part of nature, and everything in nature, including us, is interconnected." Unfortunately, we often get things backwards and act as if the opposite were true.
