As you may know, the total solar eclipse will pass over our region Monday April 8th, between the hours of 2:08 pm and 4:35 pm. 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲 Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. NASA has outlined a few do’s and don’ts: • Do not look directly at the sun • Do not use homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses; even very dark sunglasses are not safe for viewing the sun • Use special solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, to view the eclipse • Read and follow recommended solar filter instructions and supervise younger children • In any stage of the eclipse, do not look at the sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical devices, and never use solar filters with these devices, as concentrated solar rays will damage them and can cause serious eye injury • Inspect your solar filter before use; if it is scratched or damaged, discard the filter If you should experience discomfort or vision problems following the eclipse, please visit your local doctor of optometry for a comprehensive eye examination. Happy Friday! I thought it would be a great opportunity to give some tips for all of those who are preparing for the total solar eclipse this coming Monday afternoon! And while Connecticut won't be in the path of totality, we'll still have a partial view at around 92.7% in Newington, CT by around 3:27pm (mid-eclipse). The most important thing is protecting yourself to watch the show or photograph it! Here are some tips: - Proper eyewear is SO important! You can't look at the sun directly or use regular sunglasses during an eclipse. They must be Eclipse glasses that are certified to comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard (usually printed on the glasses). - Anything with a sensor (camera, telescope, your PHONE, etc can be damaged if you try to take photos without the proper filter. Phone filters are relatively inexpensive, camera solar filters can be a bit more. Don't risk ruining your device! - Using a telephoto lens (200m+) will help you get a closer shot. Look for other interesting foreground objects to make your photo unique and add depth to the image. - Use a tripod to stabilize your shot with any device or something to steady it as much as possible. Timers or remotes are helpful to use as well to limit vibration of the device. - Have kids and want to do something fun or don't have the glasses? Plan to make a pinhole projector to safely display an image of the eclipse on a piece of paper that you can view without glasses (only!). Look at this cool space picture! Isn't it pretty? It shows a faint glowing cloud called IC 410, taken with a telescope and special filters in the Netherlands. In the middle and to the right, you can see two interesting things in the cloud, called the tadpoles of IC 410. They're like shapes in a pond of gas and dust in space. The tadpoles are about 10 light-years long and made of denser, cooler gas and dust. They're probably where new Suns are being born. These tadpoles were formed in the cloudy space about 4 million years ago. The bright and hot stars in a group called NGC 1893, found inside the nebula, are making the gas around them glow. The tadpoles look like they have heads and tails. The heads are outlined by bright ridges of gas, and the tails stretch away from the young stars in the middle of the group. IC 410 and NGC 1893 are really far away, about 10,000 light-years, in a part of the sky called Auriga, which has a lot of nebulas. (A light-year is a measure of distance in space, showing how far light travels in one year. Since light moves really fast, about 186,282 miles per second, using light-years helps us describe vast distances in a simpler way, like saying how far stars or galaxies are from us.) Galactic cosmic rays are high-energy particles that originate from outside the solar system that likely come from explosive events such as a supernova. They are bad news for cameras in space -- damaging the sensor and spoiling photos -- so Nikon made special firmware for NASA to limit the harm. Pettit tells PetaPixel that Nikon changed the in-camera noise reduction settings to battle the cosmic rays -- noise is unwanted texture and blur on photos. Normal cameras have in-camera noise reduction for exposures equal to or longer than one second. This is because camera manufacturers don't think photographers need noise reduction for shorter exposures because there's no noise to reduce. But in space, that's not true. "Our cameras in space get sensor damage from galactic cosmic rays and after about six months we replace all the cameras but you still have cameras with significant cosmic ray damage," explains Pettit. "It shows up at fast shutter speeds, not just the slow ones. So we got Nikon to change the algorithm so that it can do in-camera noise reduction at shutter speeds of up to 500th of a second." Pettit says Nikon's in-camera noise reduction "does wonders" for getting rid of the cosmic ray damage and that "trying to get rid of it after the fact is really difficult." That's not the only special firmware feature that Nikon makes for NASA; photographers who shoot enough photos know that the file naming system resets itself eventually which is no good for the space agency's astronauts. "The file naming system on a standard digital system will repeat every so often and we can't have two pictures with the same number," explains Pettit. "We'll take half a million pictures with the crew on orbit and so Nikon has changed the way the RAW files are numbered so that there will be no two with the same file number." https://lnkd.in/e3rWHnZp
