Principal / Advocate and Mentor /Designer of more inclusive Public transport / AIA Emerging Architect Qld 2022
What will 2024 bring? I do not expect to do ALL the things I did in 2023, 2023 was BIG. 2023 was a year of challenging myself, of pushing myself to try new things; to not turn down an opportunity. Upon reflection I am both proud and amazed at all the things that I achieved. Being awarded the 2022 Qld emerging Architect award really opened doors for me and I took the bull by the horns. I spoke at 3 industry events across the year, events hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects, Australian Institute of Building, NAWIC QLD - National Association of Women in Construction and Women in Design and Construction. I also spoke to high school students at 8 different schools, most of which were in Far north Qld. I really enjoyed encouraging students on a career in Architecture, many were surprised to learn that Architecture can be about urban transport, about trains and about bridges (I think I convinced many budding engineers to the colourful side) Most rewarding though was the number of females who were inspired by my story and journey. Encouraging women into a career in Architecture and supporting women already in the industry is something I love to do. In 2023 I had 3 mentees and sat as chair for the Qld NAWIC education and mentoring committee once again; our committee has such an impact on so many from high school and tertiary students to early career women, through to women in executive roles across our industry. While supporting females across the construction industry is fulfilling; supporting women in my profession of Architecture is the pinnacle, that is why in 2023 I joined the AIA Qld Chapters Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee as well as the AIA National Committee for Gender Equity. These external roles build on the work I do at Hassell within our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion communities both in Brisbane and Nationally. I am so excited to sink my teeth into these roles this year, we have some exciting initiatives planned! Celebrating the incredible outcomes we have achieved on Cross River Rail was a also a highlight, so sharing those insights was a joy. By sharing our design journey, we hope that all public infrastructure can continue to be as accessible and equitable as possible. I wrote an insight piece for Property Council of Australia https://lnkd.in/gA4gpP4M I Participated in the filming of 2 mini documentaries on Cross River Rail: https://lnkd.in/gpj6eEve https://lnkd.in/g5_MFZf6 and I also squeezed in a podcast for the AIA’s EmAGN Hearing Architecture Podcast: https://lnkd.in/gYCnEWCg Finally, I was fortunate to be elected jury Chair of the AIA Qld Public Architecture award category, allowing me to explore and celebrate the incredible work of my professional peers. While I enjoyed every moment of a very challenging 2023, I know 2024 will look a little different and that I am looking forward to.

I came across this article this morning on how #feminist urbanism can influence (even transform) local government development plans. Although this isn't a new topic rarely do we see development plans with a focus on how women use the space. In essence, feminist urbanism is a critical approach in city planning that prioritizes #women's lived experiences to create inclusive and safe environments for all. From footway widths to street lighting, every aspect is meticulously designed to ensure accessibility and safety, while also fostering representation in decision-making processes. We're proud to have funded this important Sustrans research project exploring how disabled people should be represented as places transform mobility. It's so important that the needs of disabled people are considered as part of future transport planning. #AccessibleTransport #Transport #Planning #Disability #Accessibility #UserResearch

Do you have a recent talk, launch, event, project, or anything else that needed a lot of your energy and time? I did! Last week for the International Women's Day, I spoke at the LEAP Conference hosted by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) and Canadian Construction Women. I have a three-phase process that I do after events like this, and now, I'm actually doing phase 2 here, which is recharging, in Mexico! Did you know that 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of London Transport first recruiting women as bus drivers in 1974? It did, however, take a further four years before women were recruited to drive tube trains. It's fantastic to see that the London Transport Museum is honouring these pioneering women in an exhibition this February – during half term: https://lnkd.in/e8Q9u6jC A great place to take young girls and boys so they can see how these women broke down the barriers, enabling them to become drivers, conductors, mechanics, engineers and designers in transportation. Despite the progress made, women still only constitute 21% of the workforce in this industry. It’s critical for this to change in a sector that contributes £214 billion to the UK economy, employing over 1.5 million people. While strides have been made, bridging the gender gap remains an ongoing challenge. Instances like this reaffirm our purpose behind the everywoman Transport and Logistics Awards. Each year, we encounter more and more remarkable women in the industry committed to their roles, shattering gender barriers through their remarkable accomplishments and unwavering resolve. We're looking forward to honouring more extraordinary women this year, while steadfastly standing by our past transport and logistics champions, over the 16 years we've been running the awards, who are passionate about inspiring more women in the industry. https://lnkd.in/eUR38hGr #WomeninTransportandLogistics #TransportIndustry #PioneeringWomen

According to sources, women-only parking spaces aim to enhance safety for women, eliminating the need to walk long distances in isolated areas. I created this visual tribute to celebrate these cringe-worthy "Parkplätze.". #WomenSafety #ParkingSafety #GenderEquality
