Another fantastic piece out of Bessemer, introducing the new term Services-as-Software. An under-emphasized component of the article is around just how 'cumbersome' integrations really are, and how that has historically been such a drag on software adoptions. The team rightly emphasizes the role of regulation in market creation and innovation. Hopefully, the final rule in 21st Century Cures act requiring Health IT developers to use standard APIs creates just such a forcing function, by helping reduce integration costs. #healthtech #interoperability State of Health Tech 2023 - Bessemer Venture Partners (bvp.com)

I'm excited to publish alongside my Sapphire Ventures colleagues Casber Wang and David Carter to share our thoughts on the observability landscape and the trends we're seeing. We believe many of today’s challenges (e.g., increasing architectural complexity, escalating telemetry data volumes and costs, lack of data consistency and vendor interoperability, lack of coverage across personas, etc.) really opens the door for the next generation of disruptors, especially as we see a fresh new wave of innovative capabilities emerge (e.g., observability pipelines, in-stream analytics, LLMs to enhance UX & automation, AI/ML observability, OpenTelemetry, bring-your-own storage backend, and more). Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gdWiuCU6
In a world where necessity breeds invention, complexity often follows suit. As apps evolve to meet user demands for greater sophistication and performance, their underlying architectures grow increasingly intricate. In our latest blog post, we dive into observability – an essential aspect of modern application development that provides visibility into the performance and behaviors of systems for effective monitoring and debugging. Here's a sneak peek into a few key trends we're exploring across the observability landscape: 🔍 Observability Pipelines: Real-time filtering, enrichment, and routing for telemetry data management. 🛠️ Insertion of LLMs: Simplification of the user experience and enhancement of analytics and downstream automation. 🧠 Emergence of AI/ML Observability: Tools to monitor and optimize AI/ML workloads for the model development lifecycle. 📊 Industry-Wide Standardization and OpenTelemetry: Embracing OpenTelemetry for interoperability and efficiency. 💾 Bring-Your-Own Storage Backend: Flexible infrastructure utilization for cost-effective operations. 🔗 Visibility into the CI Pipeline: Optimizing the software development processes from end to end. 💼 Linking Business Outcomes to Systems Data: Correlating product-level metrics with backend performance for informed decision-making. Sapphire Ventures Casber Wang, David Carter, and Andrew Slade discuss the observability market opportunity and landscape, the challenges and innovations shaping the industry and the startups we believe are paving the way. This #ai meetup event with Jerry Liu (CEO @ LlamaIndex) and Lukas Biewald (CEO @ Weights & Biases) was a take on #generativeAI from the lens of #developerTools, #openSource, #scalability, and #data. One may think that there isn't much intersection between this and #accountingTech, #practiceManagement, and #enterpriseSaaS. If so, one would be...not wrong. :) BUT that doesn't mean there aren't applicable learnings for the #cpa world or pattern matching that is useful. One such spark was Lukas Biewald's comment that they see the most traction with the indie/SMB developers and enterprise engineering teams, but not in between. This is similar to what I've observed for #accounting profession as well - either innovative small firms that are on the bleeding edge and tinkering with new technologies, or large enterprise firms that have the resources and infrastructure to meet privacy and compliance requirements before experimenting with #generativeAI. Many of these enterprise firms have Innovation departments, or "Chief Innovation Officer" or equivalent roles. The mid-market firms are generally caught in the middle. It's been an interesting journey at Aiwyn to find different ways to meet the firms's diverse needs and be able to meet them where they are. Thanks Jake Flomenberg for moderating, Wing Venture Capital for organizing, and Notion for hosting! Looking forward to future events.

Is #AI a whole company plan? Or a very small, but significant, scalability opportunity within it? Is it the next #bigdata flop? Media and VC over-hype so much stuff. Yes it is important. But clearly you have been terrible at picking winners and losers in the past in the #agtech sector. Why should we believe you now? AI bolts on to already succesful business’ with plenty of data, systems, hardware and software that can feed it. If we keep pushing out startups chasing dreams we can keep expecting massive failure to survive and thrive.

Langdock (YC S23) has just raised $3M in seed funding to let companies use foundational models, open source models, or host their own— while staying fully in control of their data. Today, many large corporations are eager to adopt AI but don't want to be locked into a single foundational model. There's a need for an intermediary layer that allows companies to easily switch between different large language models (LLMs) without long-term commitment to one platform. Founded by Lennard Schmidt, Tobias Kemkes, and Jonas B., Langdock’s chat interface that sits between LLMs and a company lets companies tap foundational models, open source models or host their own models and make that accessible. It also helps EU companies integrate LLMs in compliance with regulations, enabling employees to work in a more secure environment where they can build prompt libraries, use multiple LLMs, and handle sensitive documents. Langdock also provides enhanced security through both cloud-based and on-premises solutions. Congrats to the team on the round!

Navigating the #LLM revolution 🚀 The ascent of LLMs represents a transformative era for the tech world, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation. As access to LLMs becomes universal, ensuring a software stands out in a crowded marketplace has never been more crucial. Indeed, the democratization of LLMs introduces a double-edged sword for software providers. 1. LLMs level the playing field, offering every player access to powerful tools. However, it risks commoditizing software solutions based on these models, leading to intense price competition. 2. The ease with which incumbents can incorporate LLM-based add-ons to address market needs further escalates the challenge, making it imperative for new entrants to differentiate effectively. For emerging startups it becomes imperative to implement robust feedback loops 🔄, narrow the initial focus 🔍, and leverage LLMs and user data to create new data assets 📈.
