Hanwha Ocean Secures Major LNG Vessel Order Worth $413.6 Million I’m excited to see South Korea continue leading in shipbuilding innovation with Hanwha Ocean's latest achievement. The major shipbuilder has recently won a 545.4 billion-won contract (equivalent to USD $413.6 million) to build a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel. This vessel, scheduled for delivery by October 2027, is a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), designed to transport and convert LNG into a usable form simultaneously. This technology offers a faster, more efficient, and cost-effective supply of natural gas, particularly for smaller markets where conventional land-based infrastructure is not feasible. With this order, Hanwha Ocean solidifies its role in the global LNG market, serving an undisclosed Asian client. The rise of FSRUs marks an important shift in how we handle natural gas transport and distribution, offering scalable solutions that meet growing energy demands while maximizing flexibility. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Limited, a South Korean shipyard, and Alpha Gas, a Greek ship management company, partnered up to contribute a series of three LNG carriers to the Alpha Gas fleet by 2023-24. Alpha Gas boasts seven LNG carriers featuring a variety of engines, including TFDE, XDF, and MEGI. Energy Endurance is the second vessel following Energy Fidelity and succeeding Energy Fortitude. Both the first and second LNG carriers are propelled with XDF engines. Energy Endurance, the 1,74,000 cubic meter long vessel, was launched in the summer of 2023, and Alpha Gas announced its delivery on 23rd January 2024. Energy Fidelity flagged off with its first employment with a world-class Far East-based charterer immediately after its delivery to Alpha Gas in April 2023. Capital Gas Ship Management Corp. (‘Capital Gas’) took successful delivery of the newbuilding LNG carriers "Assos", "Apostolos" and "Aktoras" from Hyundai Heavy Industries, S. Korea. The sister vessels with a cargo capacity of 174,000 m3 are highly efficient, propelled with MAN MEGA engines, and equipped with the latest technologies, including an air lubrication system, shaft generators, and increased filling limits (above 99%). The vessels represent the vanguard of the new generation of LNG carriers, setting an industry benchmark with their exceptionally low environmental impact. They achieve this by employing cutting-edge technologies designed to minimize methane slip and substantially reduce CO2 emissions, making them the most eco-efficient additions to the global fleet. They are three of eighteen LNG vessels delivered to Capital Gas between 2020 and 2027. Congratulations to SEA-LNG member TotalEnergies on chartering an LNG Bunker Vessel (LNGBV) from Ibaizabal Group. Total Energies’ Louise Tricoire commented that the company is committed to playing its part in “responding to the sector’s increasing demand for this fuel (LNG) which can help global shipping meet its decarbonisation ambitions,” supporting the continued growth of the existing LNG bunkering infrastructure. Ship-to-ship bunkering, driven by the global rollout of LNGBVs, has seen significant growth in recent years. Recently, SEA-LNG members have acted as industry first-movers to expand LNGBVs globally in key bunkering hubs such as Japan, Korea, Singapore, the US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, NW Europe and the Mediterranean. Today, LNG Bunkering is now available in 185 ports, with an additional 50 being added next year. The bunkering vessel fleet has increased from a single vessel in 2010 to 60 in operation today, with a further 13 on order and significant interest in the maritime community to continue to invest in these important assets. Altamira Terminal is one of its kind, with a strategic positioning off the coast of Tamaulipas, Mexico, and the introduction of NFE's first Fast LNG unit, which promises rapid and efficient liquefaction capabilities. NFE's first Fast LNG unit at Altamira expects to deliver its first cargo by the end of July. This development marks a critical milestone in NFE's operations, showcasing substantial progress since the unit reached mechanical completion earlier this year. Additionally, the arrival of the Energos Princess tanker, which appears to be en route to Altamira, underscores the facility's readiness to enter the global LNG market, potentially enhancing Mexico's energy export capabilities. Using our VesselTracker tool, we were able to track the empty LNG tanker Energos Princess heading toward NFE’s Altamira LNG. Although the AIS destination for the vessel is posted as “For Orders”, the current heading is more westward than what would be taken to sail to the nearest LNG facility, Corpus Christi LNG.
