Please stop breeding these animals just to see them destroyed. It breaks my heart. The most egregious thing is buying puppies in pet stores, online or Craigslist. These almost always come from cruel & abusive puppy mills. Greedy people who do not give even adequate care and just breed until the dog can’t and then abandon or destroy them. The USDA just rubber stamp these breeders & brokers. They often get inbred and face a lifetime of medical care. Please Google “ puppy mills” to learn more. Please share. Safety is no Accident

Being a pet owner, it's important to think add your furry family members when you create a Will. If you don't, and something unexpected occurs, your cherished furry friend might end up in an animal shelter if their is no one to care for them. ALWAYS ADOPT - DONT SHOP

So rescues work with certain shelters…some only take small or breed specific. Some don’t take behavior dogs or sick dogs listed for pre euthanasia, but if they seem perfectly healthy try anyway. Holds are being shortened. If you don’t agree then sign petitions and get involved. Nobody wants to see a healthy dog euthanized, and it’s shocking that it’s happening. Fosters don’t happen out of thin air, reach out to your company, and Highschools and active senior facilities and anyone who can help. When a shelter is in a no man’s land? Create a lifeline. Additionally, there are expenses related to pet supplies, such as bedding, toys, leashes, and litter boxes, which are necessary for their comfort and happiness. Beyond the financial aspect, owning a pet also entails emotional commitment. Pets become integral members of our families, and as such, they require emotional support and companionship. They rely on us to provide a safe and nurturing environment where they can thrive. This means being there for them during times of illness, distress, or simply offering them the companionship they need to lead fulfilling lives. Sadly, too often, individuals underestimate the responsibilities associated with pet ownership or fail to consider them altogether. This can result in neglect, abandonment, or surrendering pets to shelters—a heartbreaking outcome that could have been prevented with proper awareness and preparation. Therefore, before deciding to bring a pet into your home, take the time to reflect on your lifestyle, resources, and ability to commit. Consider factors such as your living situation, work schedule, financial stability, and any potential life changes that may impact your ability to care for a pet. Furthermore, research the specific needs and characteristics of the species and breed you're interested in to ensure they align with your lifestyle and preferences. Be honest with yourself about whether you can provide the level of care and attention your prospective pet deserves. Happy National Pet Day! If you’re like me, every day is pet day because of the bond I have with my Lulu (pictured). But this “holiday” is actually meant to focus on helping orphaned pets or those who may need some attention. How can you observe #NationalPetDay? You can pet sit, temporarily adopt one or volunteer at an animal shelter. In fact, if you don’t already have a pet, doing some of those things can help you decide if you are prepared to be a pet owner. Earlier in my public service career along with my parks team, I explored animal shelter diversion when I didn't yet know what it was. Once I made the transition to animal services I implemented that program and more in a quest to end the killing of companion animals in my community. Healthy pets do not belong in animal shelters if we can keep them with their families and find alternatives. The shelter environment, try as we might, is a place where one behavior incident or disease outbreak could cost them their lives. This article is part of Best Friends Animal Society no-kill 101 series, where we discuss crucial ways that each of us can be part of ending the practice of killing pets in our local shelters. It’s to clarify what no-kill in animal sheltering is and what it isn’t. Our goal at Best Friends is for all shelters in all communities to reach no-kill in 2025, and residents in every community play a key role. It's short.
