Inspired by Francine Parham's the Business Behind the Book Summit, I'm sharing the hook to my children's book:
Hook
Most birds head south for the winter. Mal is usually no different. But after injuring his wing, he can’t fly. Now, as the seasons change and on the verge of homelessness, Mal finds another way to get from NYC to South Carolina: in kicks!
----
In Mal from Manhattan, readers explore and connect to the world through a charismatic, sneaker loving duck named Mal. Mal lives in Central Park. Since he can't fly due to an injury, his unflappable spirit enables him to creatively think of other ways to migrate south. Determined to make the journey, Mal and his best friend, Drake, the squirrel, come up with a plan guaranteed to get him there: a pair of sneakers! In this story, young readers learn about housing insecurity, homelessness, resilience, perseverance, and the importance of friendship.
Mal from Manhattan, has been written for all of the children who are at risk of and experiencing homelessness. Plus, the families, teachers, schools, and communities who love them, raise them and educate them.
Did you know:
- Children experiencing homelessness are nine times more likely to repeat a grade and three times more likely to be placed in special education and four times more likely to drop out of school entirely.
- One in every 30 American children goes to sleep without a home of their own each year.
- Approximately 2.5 million children are homeless annually in the United States.
- On any given day, there are approximately 443,000 children in foster care in
the United States.
- And, homelessness is rising in this country. HUD reported a 12% increase in FY23 from FY22, based on the point in time count.
We need more children's books that address homelessness! This is why I'm determined to get this book published. #books #children #childrenbooks #literaryagents #homelessness
