Today is #worldwaterday where we celebrate all things water and recognise the important role it plays in our day to day lives. We are passionate about supporting the sector in its modernisation, sustainability and digital goals. I thought I would take this opportunity to share a video case study related to #smartwater. This is a project that Schneider Electric have in #collaboration with other organisations supported Fairfield Control Systems Ltd in developing a smart canal network in Scotland. The Forth & Clyde Canal was a groundbreaking achievement upon its creation in 1790 as the world's first sea-to-sea canal. With a construction period that lasted 22 years due to the lack of railway lines or major roads, it was cutting-edge innovation of its era.   Now the North Glasgow Integrated Water Management System (NGIWMS), Scottish Canals, Glasgow City Council, and Scottish Water, (under the umbrella of the Metropolitan Glasgow Strategic Drainage Scheme) have created Europe’s first ‘Smart Canal’. Using the 250-year-old Forth & Clyde Canal, a broad team of delivery partners including construction, system integration, industry organisations, and technology vendors delivered an advanced, digital surface water drainage system. The pioneering new drainage system unlocks 110 hectares of land, creating regeneration and development opportunities to pave the way for more than 3,000 new homes while protecting the area from extreme rainfall to mitigate the effects of climate change.  We will share the associated PDF case study next week, so see this as teaser! 💦 Southern Water's Transformation of Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works: Boosting Capacity and Environmental Resilience 💦 Southern Water is beginning work on a multi-million-pound project set to enhance the capabilities of the Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works. The project aims to strengthen the facility to manage increasing stormwater volumes, addressing the challenges posed by climate change induced rainfall patterns. 💧 👇 Main Points 👇 🔹 Implementation of a new tank to enhance the capacity of the Wastewater Treatment Works. 🔹 The new tank will increase stormwater capacity by 1.8 million litres, enabling the site to accommodate 7.5 million litres during wet weather before treatment and release. 🔹 This upgrade is crucial in mitigating the effects of more frequent and intense rainfall events attributed to climate change. 🔹 The project is scheduled to commence late March, targeting completion by early 2025. 🔹 In November 2023, a £4.3 million initiative aimed at mitigating unpleasant odours around the Ashford Wastewater Treatment works concluded successfully. 🔹 The installation of the new storm tank will not generate additional odour concerns in the vicinity. 🔹 Southern Water's substantial investment of £3 billion between 2020 and 2025, equating to £1,500 per household, underscores its dedication to network improvement. 🔹 Introduction of a two-year turnaround plan to drive enhanced performance, highlighting Southern Water's proactive approach to achieving results. --------------------------------------------------------- Southern Water's Project Manager, Ryan Lawrence, emphasised the company's commitment to environmental stewardship through infrastructure enhancements. ✔️ This project not only fortifies infrastructure but also aligns with broader efforts to address environmental challenges and enhance community well-being. Furthermore, Thames Water's portfolio of inventive endeavours extends to converting waste into biochar and strengthening sustainable urban drainage systems. By leveraging advanced technology and a commitment to sustainability, the company aims to offer substantial benefits to consumers while safeguarding the environment. Considering the broader implications, these pioneering efforts may very well pave the way for the integration of green energy solutions and contribute to a collective goal of a sustainable future. Water treatment in the United States is a 100 billion dollar a year industry, and yet less than 50 million dollars a year goes into using green infrastructure to treat water and restore watersheds instead of building energy intensive, carbon emitting gray infrastructure. Our new methodology is the first time anyone has used carbon credits to incentivize green infrastructure on America's rivers, replacing and avoiding centralized treatment. We're looking forward to bringing the first credits to market under this methodology soon! I've been working at the intersection of the voluntary carbon market and water security since 2007 - the water sector contributes 10% of global emissions, while at the same time billions of people face water insecurity. We can solve both problems by bringing global climate finance to local water challenges.

Our Senior Engineer Hisney Nowfal, Middleton Group Water Lead and Design Manager, was among the stakeholders who attended the official kick-off of the $711 million upgrade of the Western Treatment Plant (WTP) at Werribee on Wadawurrung Country southwest of Melbourne last week. See below the post by Melbourne Water on the event. Middleton Group with John Holland is designing the electrical systems that will run the upgrade. Hisney says that he and his team are excited to be part of a project that will update Melbourne’s wastewater treatment plant for the growing city as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and generating renewable energy.  “At Middleton Group, our goal is to create a sustainable energy future for our communities and, in particular, our children and grandchildren,” he says, “so this project means everything for the water electrical team.” Run by Melbourne Water and roughly the size of Phillip Island, the WTP currently treats approximately 200 billion litres of sewage per year in a unique lagoon-based system that will be transformed into a modern state-of-the-art facility.  The upgrade, which involves a bundle of work under the title Resource Recovery and Re-Use Complex, will extend primary treatment capacity by a further 95 billion litres a year.
