Finite Pointset Method in aircraft simulations at VPS User Conference 2024 ✈ Last week, the VPS User Conference 2024 was held in Prague, organized by ESI Group. On the second day, our institute participated in the #aerospace session with the presentation "FPM Liquid for Fluid Structure Interaction in Aeronautics: Ditching, Floatation, Fuel Sloshing". In this presentation the recent progress in using the Finite Pointset Method for realistic #simulation of transient interactions between incompressible fluids (water, liquid hydrogen) and aeronautical structures are presented. You can find the the full presentation in the DLR online library: https://lnkd.in/gSKP4PAV Thanks to ESI Group for sharing some impressions of the day here: https://lnkd.in/gBDC5whv Contacts: Dieter Kohlgrüber and Christian Leon Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. #dlrbt #dlr #esi #esigroup #research #aviation #aeronautics #aircraft #ditching #floatation #sloshing #simulation #software #luftfahrt #flugzeug #wasserlandung #LH2 #FPM #VirtualPerformanceSolution #forschung

After a first flight in May another 26 flights were flown at Aeroporti di Puglia in Grottaglie (Italy), with our scaled version of a large passenger aircraft with distributed electric propulsion. 📽 ✈ The dynamics of the aircraft was measured and two control algorithms using asymmetric thrust were tested. Part of the manoeuvres were flown with the remote human pilot in the ground station controlling the aircraft with control surfaces and through differential thrust (meaning the motors on the left and the right side have different rotation speed). We learned a lot about the technology! The project contributes to the objective of the Clean Sky 2 programme of the European Commission in which Airbus, ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre, TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering, Orange Aerospace.-, and NLR collaborate. #scaledflightdemonstrator #SFD #innovation #aerospace

On September 2, the Boundary Layer Transition 1B (BOLT-1B) experiment, a joint research project of Johns Hopkins APL, the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), traveled over the Norwegian Sea at Mach 7.2. 🚀 https://jhuapl.link/ifq The experiment provided important data on a phenomenon called "boundary layer transition" (the flow of air around the skin of a hypersonic vehicle), which increases hypersonic vehicle drag and aerodynamic heating. That scientific data will be used by researchers to validate new and more accurate modeling and prediction methods during the design of hypersonic vehicles. To collect this data, the experiment was equipped with instruments to take over 400 measurements, with locations on the vehicle determined through extensive research to better understand the physics of boundary layer transition on the BOLT vehicle's geometry. #JHUAPL | #Hypersonics | #BoundaryLayer | #SupersonicFlight | #DefenseInnovation | #AerospaceEngineering | #SystemsEngineering
