This article highlights proposed changes to the US Census that could lead to a significant undercount of disabled individuals, exacerbating an already existing issue of underrepresentation. Despite the opportunity for public input, obstacles have hindered those most affected from voicing their concerns effectively. However, Matthew Cortland and Data for Progress have taken a proactive step by creating a GPT-4 bot assistant to help disabled individuals submit comments on the proposal. This emphasizes the importance of inclusive and accessible AI development to empower and support disabled individuals in various aspects of life. A recent study by @BarnaGroup examined the beliefs, behaviors and motivations of young adults aged 18-35 across 25 countries. Here are 3 key takeaways: 1. Digital Natives but Not Digital Neighbors While young adults are highly connected online, many struggle to have meaningful in-person interactions. Over 1 in 3 feel lonely frequently or almost all the time. 2. Searching for Truth The study found a widespread spiritual openness, with 43% considering themselves "spiritual" and 23% "religious." However, only 16% identified as practicing Christians. 3. Ethically Adrift On moral issues like abortion, sex outside marriage, viewing pornography and LGBTQ relationships, young adults across the globe displayed a secular worldview disconnected from traditional morality. The insights reveal the opportunities and challenges in engaging this globally connected yet disconnected generation. As the researchers note, "The opportunity to provide ...belonging, truth and moral coherence has never been more staggering." Award-winning Researcher | TED Speaker | Global Health | Western University | University of Toronto | Gender Equity | LGBTQ+ Health
🌟 Reflecting on the whirlwind that was 2023! 🌍 This year has been nothing short of transformative, filled with incredible opportunities to make a meaningful impact. At the University of Toronto, I was privileged to guide ≈300 undergrad students through the basics of qualitative and community-based participatory studies. Emphasizing the vital role of #dei & justice in research, the journey was both time-intensive and profoundly fulfilling. Going back to TED Conferences in Vancouver was a highlight, where I shared insights into our groundbreaking work combatting discrimination and violence against queer folxs in Latin America. Our mobile health intervention, with +10,000 active users, has become a lifeline, empowering users to report crimes and access essential services - from pro-bono legal support to queer-friendly shelters and mental health resources. Presenting at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) on the mental health impact of discrimination and gender-based violence towards transgender, lesbian, and bisexual women was a pivotal moment. Addressing the alarming rates of violence against the queer community, our study aimed to bring about much-needed change. Contributing to UNAIDS in Geneva allowed us to reimagine strategies, frameworks, and policies evaluating the impact of HIV/AIDS among LGBTQ+ individuals, people who use drugs, sex workers, and incarcerated persons. And working in Geneva is … 🤩 Teaching #socialdeterminantsofhealth at Western University was a fantastic experience. This year’s #mph cohort brought diversity and enthusiasm to every class, focusing on fostering productive and critical thinking through #DEI and justice strategies. The cohort’s creativity in end-of-year activities promises to breathe fresh oxygen into the field of #globalhealth At 500 Women Scientists, our commitment to an open, inclusive, and accessible scientific community remains unwavering. Initiatives like the Gage Platform and Wikithons are close to my heart, aiming to amplify the contributions of women and gender-diverse individuals in #stem. As section co-leader for Global Mental Health at PLOS Global Health, I am thrilled to be part of a journal with an incredibly diverse group of editors, working collaboratively to amplify the voices of #bipoc experts, Indigenous scholars, and individuals from impacted communities. Stepping away from my research role at CAMH was a tough decision... But I am embracing my identity as an educator and community-based researcher, not someone defined by the ‘publish or perish’ motto. 💪🏽 As I embark on the journey into 2024, I am actively seeking new opportunities to continue the fight against discrimination and health inequity in the Global South. Huge thanks to all my collaborators for their unwavering support—onwards to another year of meaningful change! 🚀 #YearInReview #ImpactfulJourney #GlobalHealth #SocialJustice #DiversityInSTEM #OnwardsAndUpwards

APPLY BY 7/12 | FELLOWSHIP: The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and the Journalists Network on Generations are accepting applications — from journalists who represent general-audience or ethnic/community news outlets in the U.S. and who are covering/wish to cover issues in #aging — for the 15th year of the Journalists in Aging Fellows Program. By 2030, one-fifth of the country’s population will be age 65+, with the fastest growing segment being ethnic minorities. The effects of this demographic shift permeate every aspect of American life — with important social, economic, and health implications. This program's goals are to educate journalists about issues in aging, better allowing them to spread a new awareness to general audiences and ethnic or targeted communities (such as LGBTQ, disability, or gender-focused groups); and to disseminate accurate information about new scientific findings, policy debates, innovations, and evidence-based solutions. Additionally, the program is structured to build three bridges: to connect working reporters with experts in the field; to link journalists new to the complex issues of aging with experienced age-beat reporters; and ultimately to channel reporters’ enhanced knowledge — fortified by current research — to their communities, in their own languages. Ph.D. Student at University of Nevada-Las Vegas | Psychological & Brain Sciences Program 🧠 | Intersectional Hypervigilance Research 🔍
🚀 Reflecting on my research journey: as I propose my thesis in 1 month! As an undergraduate researcher, I had the unique opportunity to delve into Misophonia, a term not widely recognized by the general public. I was honored to be able to research this phenomena in the UNLV Auditory and Cognition Lab under our PostDoc Solena Mednicoff (who now works at the Misophonia Research Fund! 🎉) Additionally my time at the UNLV Baby and Child Rebel lab as an led me to explore children's racial biases and imitative fidelity, all eventually guiding me to study a different phenomena as a graduate student- hypervigilance. 🔍 Hypervigilance is characterized as a heightened state of alertness in the absence of a genuine threat, is an essential yet often overlooked phenomenon. This can manifest as excessive crowd scanning, avoiding certain places, or repeatedly checking door locks, and can have significant long-term health impacts (Kennedy, 2023; Kimble et al., 2013; Weinreb, 2019). Despite its prevalence, hypervigilance is not frequently discussed, although many people experience these behaviors, especially those with minority identities. 💡 Recent events have underscored the importance of understanding hypervigilance: escalating violence against minorities highlighted by movements like Black Lives Matter (Smith et al., 2020), the surge of xenophobia during the COVID-19 pandemic (Choi et al., 2021), harmful impacts of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation (Hatzenbuehler et al., 2019), and increasing violence towards women (O'Brien et al., 2020). Additionally, the rise in university shootings, violence, and sexual assaults targeting minority groups has added significant stress to emerging adults (Lin et al., 2019; Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, 2023). 🌟 My journey has taught me the profound importance of these issues, and I am committed to continuing my research to bring greater awareness and understanding to these critical topics. I aim to shed light on hypervigilance and its impact on minority populations and am proposing my thesis in one month! #countdown #hypervigilance #minorityresearch #racialbiases #misophonia #collaborativeresearch

Up very early to complete an at-home diagnostic test for Sarah Rottenberg's students who are working on a new product. I'm the perfect person to do research on myself! Over 20 years ago, Sarah and I worked together in Chicago at Doblin where I learned about user journeys. Today, I am up BEFORE COFFEE re-reading the directions I've already read 10 times. And let me say...I'm frustrated. And I know how much this company got funded. I know how many experts worked on this product. And here I am. A professional who has worked in public health, communications, and start-ups to find myself doing it wrong, confused, frustrated, and did I mention I have to do the test BEFORE COFFEE? I'm thankful that my work now includes clients who have come to us asking for help to get this right. Because so many of us have anxiety, frustration, and even anger when it comes to healthcare and medical processes. At the Eidos LGBTQ+ Health Initiative we focus on LGBTQ+ patients because we are a population who has been ignored and mistreated for too long. Now, imagine this product focused on a user journey for those of us who have been left out of these conversations. What new things would you hear? When you center those of us who have been on the margins, you learn new ways of seeing your work. We call this "Queering Solutions" and yes, we believe that taking control of your health can be both fun and empowering. Now, I have to get more coffee.

👋 Another new class this spring, for those for those still tinkering with their schedules: Our fantastic PhD student, Debra Carroll-Beight, is offering a new course, BETH 602 (Section 124) Queer Bioethics, worth 1.5 credits! If you're into challenging norms and exploring the impact of bioethics on LGBTQI+ communities, this one's for you. 📅 When: First 7 Wednesdays, January 17 to Feb 28 🕰️ Time: 10 am - 12 pm Description: Our medical, legal, and socio-cultural practices are built upon our collective understandings (and sometimes misunderstandings) of sex, gender, and what we designate as “normal.” This course will challenge heteronormative and cisnormative ideas and practices that impact LGBTQI+ communities. We will explore the forms and functions of bioethics relevant to LGBTQI+ health situated among frameworks of queer, feminist, crip, and disability theories. Through the course, we will assess contemporary debates surrounding sex and gender, and how these discussions interact with bioethical principles. We aim to equip students with the ability to synthesize various theoretical disciplines in addressing bioethical concerns pertinent to LGBTQI+ populations. The course seeks to deepen students'; understanding of the complexities of queer bioethics and to contribute to the development of inclusive and equitable health policy and practice. 🎓 It's an opportunity to learn from a fellow student, broaden your perspective, engage in lively discussions, and contribute to a more inclusive approach to health. Don't miss out! 🌈📚 #QueerBioethics #LGBTQI #inclusivehealthcare #LearnWithUs

📰 Article Review: Unveiling Contemporary Populationist Thinking In their thought-provoking article, "A Feminist Exploration of 'Populationism'", Bhatia et al. (2019) delves into the enduring relevance of population control amidst shifting socio-political landscapes. Contrary to common belief, the authors argue that population control remains a pertinent issue, albeit in nuanced and contemporary forms. The authors highlight a paradigm shift initiated by feminist movements around the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo. This shift, termed a "paradigm shift" by political scientist Paige Whaley Eager, replaced population control rhetoric with a discourse centered on reproductive rights and health. However, Bhatia et al. contend that population control has not faded away but rather morphed into subtler manifestations, which they term "populationism." This concept encompasses three interlinked strands: demopopulationism, geopopulationism, and biopopulationism. Demopopulationism involves interventions aimed at achieving 'optimal' population sizes and compositions through methods such as fertility manipulation and the creation of population data. Geopopulationism focuses on spatial practices, surveillance, and governance to include or exclude specific populations from particular spaces. Biopopulationism, on the other hand, delves into strategies manipulating life through technoscientific advancements, viewing individuals as potential contributors to societal well-being. The authors assert that these populationist strategies perpetuate inequalities and violence, particularly affecting marginalized communities. They critique initiatives like Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) and highlight the exploitation of neoliberal subjectivity and feminist empowerment rhetoric in contemporary population control agendas. Moreover, the article underscores the interconnectedness of these populationist forms and their mutual reinforcement, emphasizing the need for continued scrutiny and feminist, intersectional responses. In essence, Bhatia et al.'s article sheds light on the persistence and evolution of populationist thinking in the 21st century, urging readers to critically engage with the complex dynamics shaping global population politics. Please read the full article for a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of contemporary populationism and its implications for social justice and environmental sustainability.
