Corporate power is at an all-time high and businesses, especially big corporations in the US, dominate the policymaking process through lobbying, advocacy and political spending. Corporate political engagement tends to prioritize short-term financial gains and provide minimal transparency, leading big businesses to be major contributors to the rising inequality in the US and around the world. At Oxfam, we put human rights front and center of everything we do, and our goal is to work with allies and partners, as well as policymakers, civil society, and investors on how to best engage corporations to tackle inequality, which has emerged to be one of the most urgent systemic risks of our time. In this brief, we provide a roadmap for businesses to redesign their political engagement by putting human rights first
Tackling inequality and climate change requires responsible corporate political engagement

**GIA READER** Cultivating the Conditions: Philanthropy’s Role in Fortifying the Infrastructure for Narrative Power by Mandy Van Deven "Global justice movements are being outmaneuvered by ill-intentioned contenders for the future who are better-resourced and highly practiced at maintaining a narrative environment that reinforces inequities and stands in the way of change. But what if philanthropy committed to resourcing narrative work that would enable us to manifest our highest aspirations?" said Mandy Van Deven in Cultivating the Conditions: Philanthropy’s Role in Fortifying the Infrastructure for Narrative Power. "Funders can play an important role in closing the gap between who we are and who we aspire to be, but it will require us to engage in shared learning, experimentation, and funding the narrative infrastructure that is needed for global justice movements to win."
