It's officially official! The Biden administration has at last rejected permits for the proposed Ambler mining road, defeating the 211-mile road once and for all. This is an Alaska-size win for Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve, caribou & Alaska Native communities. This victory comes after years of advocacy led by Alaska Native communities and supported by park lovers from across the nation. NPCA is proud to have joined the fight to say #NoAmblerRoad #Alaska #NationalParks #ParkProtection #ParkAdvocate #GatesOfTheArctic #Wildlife

Coming together to protect these wetlands that we have very few of now would be in our best interest as a species.
“Of the nation’s many controversial mines, few are more vilified, politically embattled or consequential than the one proposed by Twin Pines Minerals, an Alabama company whose property abuts Okefenokee. By lowering the water table of Okefenokee, mining could transform the refuge to a dried-out shell of its former self, forever damaging the country’s largest blackwater wetland.” Read our latest blog on looming threats the Okefenokee faces and how you can help with your voice: https://dfnd.us/4cKoQO7

In remote far western Queensland, traditional owners are taking on a mining giant in a last-ditch attempt to protect their land, seeking to have two reserves receive ‘special wildlife’ status in a bid to stop multiple mining ventures. Located on the border of Queensland and the Northern Territory, the Pilungah and Ethabuka reserves contain spiritually significant carvings and caves. The area is also rich with deposits of minerals which are the target of mining companies including Rio Tinto. Wangkamadla traditional owners have partnered with site owner Bush Heritage Australia to have the two reserves granted special wildlife status, which would cancel dozens of mining permits across the region. Wangkamadla woman Avelina Tarrago told the ABC they want to avoid another Juukan Gorge situation. “It’s not just for our generations living now, its for our future generations and as traditional custodians we have that obligation to preserve and enrich our history. Once those pristine landscapes are damaged they’re irreplaceable.” #traditionalowners #miningnews #miningcompany #culturalheritage #protection #wildlife #environment #aboriginalculture #environment #aboriginalaustralia #aboriginalart #aboriginal #queensland #australia

NPCA is in on the ground in Washington, DC with Alaskan Tribal advocates to passionately urge decision makers to say "no" once and for all to the proposed Ambler mining road. On Saturday night, advocates took the stage at a sold-out @portugaltheman show at The Anthem to speak out against the 211-mile road, and how it threatens Indigenous communities and ways of life. Today, we met with the House Natural Resources Committee and the Biden administration so leaders could hear directly from the communities this road would affect the most. During our meetings, Quinn Christopherson, an Athabascan singer-songwriter told HNRC: "It's time to stop gambling our nature in exchange for oil." We're expecting the Biden administration to make a final decision this spring on the road. A few more reasons NPCA stands ardently against the Ambler road: 🛢It would be built atop permafrost, unsettling the ecosystem 🪹 It would slice through Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve 💧 It would bulldoze over more than 3,000 waterways, harming already at-risk food sources 🦌 It would interrupt the Western Arctic Caribou herd and their migration path #NoAmblerRoad #NoRoadToAmbler #Alaska #ProtectOurParks #ParkProtection #AlaskanParks #GatesOfTheArctic #ParkAdvocacy #NativeVoices

"The Smith River is deeply woven within Montana’s cultural fabric and history. Each year, thousands of Montanans and non-residents apply for a permit to journey through its spectacular 59-mile-long limestone canyon. Floating the Smith is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, allowing for world-class trout fishing, wildlife viewing, and other unforgettable experiences that enrich our lives and become stories carried on through generations. These lands have been used for millennia by Montana’s first peoples, with some of the best examples of Native American pictographs in Montana.... Recently, there has been a push for industrial-scale mining on private and public lands in the Smith River drainage. While Montanans understand the necessity of certain mining for modern society, the serious environmental damage that often results from mining means it isn’t appropriate everywhere. Because of the Smith River’s unparalleled natural attributes and cultural importance, mining on public lands within the Smith watershed simply is not appropriate. " I encourage all of my connections to sign the petition below in support of protecting this watershed.
Breaking News: We are stunned and saddened to share that today, the Montana Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Black Butte Mine in the Smith River. Today, the Court overturned Trout Unlimited's Montana's lower court victory on both the MEPA and MMRA claims filed against the Black Butte Mine and DEQ. The Australian-owned Tintina Company will now be reissued its permit to build an industrial copper mine along the most important trout tributary to the Smith River. Fortunately, our fight to protect the Smith River from this mine is not over. We cannot appeal the MT Supreme Court decision, but we will continue to pursue our coalition’s water rights claims against the mining company, now in front of the MT Supreme Court, to be heard on March 29, 2024. We are also deeply committed to establishing a mineral withdrawal on public lands in the Smith watershed that will provide invaluable protection for the river and its many attributes for decades to come. If you have not signed our petition, visit the link below NOW and add your name! #saveoursmith #nosmithmine #smithriver #smithmineralwithdrawal

The State Government’s closure of the Byerwen Mine camp means that mine workers – already tired from 12.5-hour shifts – would be forced to spend an extra 45 minutes to an hour driving an isolated rural road back to Glenden every morning and night. ‘Driving up and down on that road in the morning or at night time is just dangerous…. It’s a huge fatigue issue. There’s no mobile reception on that road. If you have a breakdown you’ve got to rely on someone to come over and pull you up. You can’t call anyone.’ There’s already been a 25% increase on animal collisions on Queensland roads in the last 12 months. Let’s keep our Queensland workers safe and in their mine camp! HECHO firmly stands with the Apache Stronghold, the San Carlos Apache Tribe, and Arizonans in the efforts to protect Oak Flat and vital water resources for the community. While this is disappointing, the ruling does not clear the way for the construction of Resolution Copper's mine at Oak Flat. Read this blog to learn what this ruling means to the future of Oak Flat and what you can do about it. https://ow.ly/TSr850QLzR1 #SaveOakFlat #OakFlat #Arizona #Water #Waterconservation

At first glance I thought the video was quite spectacular, until something jumped off the page at me! "The Klamath Dam Removal project will benefit the Tribes, ecosystem, and salmon". So I dug a bit further and found a story of extraordinary collaboration, and future thinking from unlikely bedfellow. I can only imaging the discussions and decisions were courageous to overcome competing interests. It led me to wonder if we could ever be so courageous and forward thinking when in comes to the Murray Darling system. https://lnkd.in/gEjmw5nn #ErosionControl #RiverbankProtection #RiverbedStabilization #SedimentControl #WaterwayManagement #NaturalBankRestoration #StreamRestoration #TurbidityReduction #EcoFriendlyDesigns #SustainableEngineering #Dams #Spillway #ScourProtection 👏
California takes the next steps this week on the nation’s largest dam removal project with the blasting at the base of the Copco No. 1 Dam to drain the reservoir. The Klamath Dam Removal project will benefit the Tribes, ecosystem, and salmon. 🌱 We applaud Secretary Haaland’s announcement of an Interagency National #NativeSeed Center during the National Native Seed Conference. The establishment of an interagency center was a key recommendation offered by the National Academy of Sciences in a recent report that highlighted the severity of the national native seed shortage and its implications for healthy lands and waters. 🐝 #NativePlants support native #wildlife and #pollinators. The BLM and other federal agencies need millions of pounds of native seed every year and are only able to acquire a fraction of that. An interagency seed and restoration center and continued investment in the National Seed Strategy will help address this major challenge and need. Check out our factsheet to learn about the challenges that federal agencies currently face in acquiring native seeds.

“The draft proposal just doesn’t cut it for the sage-grouse. The draft proposal still allows for oil and gas drilling, mining, and other activities—some of the biggest threats to the bird’s habitat. We need a drastic departure from the BLM’s approach of whittling away at the last best places for the sage-grouse,” – Vera Smith, our senior federal lands policy analyst. The Biden Administration today released a draft amendment to the Bureau of Land Management’s land use plans covering much of the land intended to protect the greater sage-grouse, an imperiled species that faces serious challenges from prolonged habitat loss and climate change. https://dfnd.us/43fAvA7
