Green H2 is an excellent solution for long-term energy storage in renewable microgrid. These microgrids combine various decentralized assets such as solar/wind generators, thermal storage, electrolysers, H2 storage, H2 cells, batteries, controllable loads, EV chargers... In addition to LT storage, microgrids should have an optimal list of business use cases and be certified for interoperability per standards such as IEC 61850, IEC CIM, IEEE 2030-7. Integrating diverse energy sources into microgrids enhances micro-balancing of generation, storage, and load while improving affordability. Developing renewable microgrids involves multiple stakeholders, but creating an economy of scale with microgrids can speed up the modernization of macrogrid. The ‘Earth-shot prize’ has the potential to stimulate municipalities to create optimal business use cases for off-grid renewable microgrids for critical facilities. This might sound counterintuitive, but developing off-grid renewable microgrids can speed up macrogrid development. It is always easier to develop something new if applied on a smaller scale first. So, trying green H2 in microgrids before deploying it on a macrogrid scale can help replace ‘blue/gray’ hydrogen more effectively.

As a long time partner of the LA Clean Tech Incubator (LACI), thank you my late friend #RonNichols, Edison under Pedro’s leadership has challenged basic planning and thinking toward the electrification and decarbonization of our state’s economy. Their embrace of renewables across the state, EV tech and infrastructure, community participation and environmental justice as well as diversity, equity and inclusion puts them at the forefront as a defining case study as a forward thinking, ESG driven corporate platform and leadership driven company focused on stake holder, shareholder and community based value. And it has been now for some time with Pedro leading the way, modestly and humbly I might add. As innovators in this sector, I can see them becoming leaders in the next chapter toward responding to climate change of renewable energy w technologies such as battery storage, green hydrogen fuel cell energy generation and net carbon negative biomass power. As a Founder and Co-chair Emeritus of LACI, I’d like to congratulate Pedro Pizarro, on being the LACI Corporate Visionary Award recipient for 2023. Earlier in the week I was speaking with a client, and I used a metaphor to explain the current situation in the market. Specifically, the trepidation of many corporate buyers to participate actively and vocally in the VCM, due to their natural risk aversion due in large part for the protection of their brand. In making the metaphor I likened the media attacks on the VCM to the crocodiles in the Mara River in Kenya and Tanzania that scare a herd of wildebeest from crossing as part of their annual migration. (In the metaphor, the corporate buyers make up the herd). What I asked, was what would it take to for the herd to overcome the fear of a few crocs, as their genetic imperative for survival that underpins the migration (in this case the imperative to decarbonize to avoid extinction) would be in the context of the VCM? I postulated that the work of the end-to-end integrity initiative of The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) + VCMI addressed this very issue = INTEGRITY as a foundational element to enable the market to scale as assets therein become investable. That work has been steadfast and significant input by thousands of experts and stakeholders committed to enhancing integrity in the market. Furthermore, I believed that before the end of 2024 an opportunity exists for a signal which would catalyse corporate participation in the VCM especially for the scope 3/BVCM emissions that are incredibly hard to reduce without a price signal. Perhaps that comes from the good folks at the Science Based Targets initiative or Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). Ultimately, that signal would provide choice to participants and allow them (if they choose) to include the purchase of high integrity carbon credits (both removal and avoidance) in meeting SBTIs.Perhaps, the tipping point is another such tacit endorsement, or policy signal. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that without markets we just don't achieve our 2.0C let alone 1.5C targets, protect our natural carbon sinks and the biodiversity therein, and that as a result that carbon markets are an important and inevitable part of the solution.
