🔊 "Farmers who want to stay in the game need to be better than average" On January 31st, 2024, we hosted the first IFCN monthly researcher meeting of the year. Among the highlights of this webinar was a thought-provoking presentation by IFCN researcher Dr. Hauke Tergast, titled 🔊 "Dairy Farming in Germany: A Climate Perspective." 🔊 highlighting the following key points:   👉 German farmers are striving to maintain sustainable farming practices amidst strikes and economic challenges. 👉 The green deal and other policy concepts are putting pressure on the dairy sector. 👉 What are the strategies and opportunities for the German dairy sector in the following years? 4.      In the next 15-20 years, the number of dairy farms in Germany may decrease by half, but milk efficiency is expected to increase due to advancements in farming.   Our forthcoming webinar, scheduled for the 28th of February and featuring Jan van Beekhuizen, our expert from the Netherlands, is accessible to our research partners.   Please contact Shiyin Zhong, our research network manager, if you would like to join the IFCN network. 📣 The report on “Strategic Dialogue on the future of EU agriculture” is published! ▶️PURPOSE OF THE DIALOGUE Launched in January 2024, the Strategic Dialogue on the future of EU agriculture is a new forum that aims to shape a shared vision for EU farming. The Strategic Dialogue brings together key stakeholders from across the whole agri-food chain, including farmers, co-operatives, agri-food businesses, and rural communities; as well as non-governmental organisations and civil society representatives, financial institutions and academia. ▶️DEVELOPING A JOINT UNDERSTANDING The Dialogue is crucial for developing a joint understanding of the future EU farming and food system. It tackles the following challenges and opportunities: 🌾How can we give our farmers, and the rural communities they live in, a better perspective, including a fair standard of living? 🌾How can we support agriculture within the boundaries of our planet and its ecosystem? 🌾How can we make better use of the immense opportunities offered by knowledge and technological innovation? 🌾How can we promote a bright and thriving future for Europe's food system in a competitive world? ▶️ The Dialogue is an opportunity to hear the perspectives, ambitions, concerns and solutions of farmers and other key stakeholders from across the agri-food chain, with the aim to find a common ground for the future of the Union’s agri-food sector. These days we seem to be obsessed with big complex questions on food system transformation and we get confused about agriculture. Over time the perspective on agriculture has evolved: it is now seen as part of a wider system. In this system, other elements also play a role, such as sufficiency, affordability, safety, healthiness, diversity of food, environment, etc. However it’s not so straightforward in some parts of the world, where it's more important to produce enough food than to protect the environment. A food system is a man-made construction. It's not logistics, it's us, we are the food system.
