Last Tuesday, #FarmtoForkSummit took place at 10 Downing Street, addressing the important issue of #foodsecurity in the #UK. Neighbourly and our colleagues across the redistribution sector were really pleased to see the government putting this issue at the top of the agenda. It makes sense - after all, extreme weather events are becoming more and more common due to #climatechange, leading to shortages and hits to crop productivity. Plus, in the UK, we’ve got a growing population, and we import 46% of our food. At last week's Redistribution Forum, co-ordinated by WRAP, we agreed that we feel hugely optimistic about the role maximising food redistribution can play in guaranteeing food security for the UK. We’re united by the belief that no food fit for human consumption should go to waste. Whether that’s through discounting, donating to charity, or sharing via community models, all edible surplus should feed humans (not anaerobic digestion or landfill). It won’t be possible to achieve food security if we don't urgently address the fact that only 7% of the UK’s food surplus is redistributed. If we fix that, we can put a stop to good food needlessly going to waste across the UK’s value chain, from farm to fork. We’d love to join the government at their next session to share our thoughts on how our sector can help. 🚚❄️ Tackling food waste and supporting communities in need – an inspiring initiative! The UK government’s announcement of £15 million to help charities distribute surplus produce to those who need it most is a crucial step in addressing inefficiencies in the food supply chain and alleviating food insecurity. At CoolRun, we see opportunities like this as a chance to reflect on the role temperature-controlled logistics can play in maximizing the impact of surplus food redistribution. Whether it's reducing spoilage or ensuring the safe transport of perishable items to food banks and community kitchens, efficient and sustainable cold chain solutions are key. In a world where one-third of all food is wasted while millions go hungry, partnerships between innovative logistics providers, government, and charities can make a profound difference. We’re committed to continuing conversations about how zero-emission cold chain technology can further the mission of sustainability and social impact. California's new SB 1383 is reshaping how we handle food waste by requiring businesses to donate surplus food instead of discarding it. It’s an exciting step forward, but the real challenge is creating widespread awareness, education and driving action toward source reduction. Thank you for the feature Modern Farmer! Did you know…that the food industry discards 6.2 million tonnes of food every year in the UK? That’s the equivalent weight of 17 Empire State Buildings!! No food should end up in landfill, especially food that is good enough to eat - which is why we're really glad to see so many supermarkets, restaurants/cafes and organisations committed to reducing food waste. Whilst this is still an ongoing problem, we wanted to highlight a few of the great initiatives currently being implemented in the food industry: Supermarkets: ✅ Removing best before dates on many fresh fruit and veg products ✅ Offering ‘wonky’ fruit and veg Restaurants/cafes: ✅ Offering surplus food for a fraction of the price on apps like Too Good to Go Organisations: ✅ Redistribution charities like FareShare who take edible surplus food from retailers, manufacturers, farmers and growers and redistribute to those that are in vulnerable circumstances Reducing food waste should be on everyone’s minds, so if you’re a food business with no plan in place to do this, why not implement similar initiatives or come up with your own? Small collective changes can have a huge impact! Are there any other great initiatives to add? ⬇️ #stopfoodwasteday Stop Food Waste Day

"System problems need system solutions, from farm to fork" 👩🌾🍽 Here's a great summary from Kaitlin Dawson on the recent food waste report released last week. Watch on the link below 👇
Key food waste recommendations for accelerating progress. In her role as the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, Dame Juliet Gerrard and her team were charged with creating an evidence base for food waste action in Aotearoa. We were privileged to be among the many brilliant stakeholders and experts who supported this work, and to launch the final reports and recommendations to government at our Leading Action on Food Waste event in Auckland a couple of weeks ago. Food waste is a complex issue, so not surprisingly, the recommendations for action are many and wide-ranging. This summary aims to provide a high-level overview of the key themes and recommendations, as well as share what we see as priority areas that New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust) will be working with government and industry to act on now. We all touch food and food waste, these affect all of us. Take a few minutes to hear the recommendations, read a summary and access the reports here https://lnkd.in/gVyejPAP #foodwaste #policy #foodsystem #collaboration

How does Campbell's reduce food waste and feed hungry Camden residents and make an impact on food security and food waste across New Jersey? By being part of the Meal Recovery Coalition (MRC), a new alliance of private, nonprofit and government stakeholders dedicated to recovering surplus meals from corporate cafeterias and safely delivering them to hungry New Jersey residents. The Campbell Soup Company is one of seven New Jersey-based corporations participating in this innovative collaboration, spearheaded by Share My Meals Inc. Other founding corporate members include Bristol Myers Squibb, Novo Nordisk, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Sanofi, and Capital Health (US) “There are so many benefits for us to participate in the meal recovery program at Campbell's”, Kate Barrett, president of the Campbell’s Foundation, said. “Certainly number one, improving food security in our hometown, by donating food that would have otherwise gone to waste. So far in just the first nine months or so of this program, approximately 1,200 pounds [1,000 meals] were donated to Cathedral Kitchen and to residents in need. It’s also a great opportunity for us to partner across our organization to work with our environmental sustainability team to keep this waste out of the waste stream and reduce greenhouse gases. We also engage employees in the program by having them deliver that food to Cathedral Kitchen each week. Then they become ambassadors.” Learn more about today’s announcement here https://lnkd.in/es2BHCb3 or visit our webpage https://lnkd.in/ehcBQWa6 New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) Rutgers University 📷 Tamara Gillon - de Ghellinck #CampbellSoup #FoodInsecurity #FoodWaste #FoodSecurity #ShareMyMeals #NJEDA #MealRecoveryRevolution #MealRecoveryCoalition

Sunday was International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 🌎 Food loss and waste is a global issue that impacts not only our environment but also food security and our economy. Shockingly, 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year – that's nearly 1/3 of all food produced. Imagine the impact if we could change that! At TNS, we're making a conscious effort to reduce food waste at every level. Here's how: 🌱 Smart planning: Careful menu planning ensures we prepare the right portions for events, reducing waste from the start. 🌱 Sustainable sourcing: Partnering with local suppliers to shorten supply chains and reduce loss during transportation. 🌱 Repurposing surplus food: Surplus ingredients find new life in creative dishes, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. 🌱 Food donations: Any surplus goes to local charities and food banks, helping to feed those in need instead of filling landfills. 💡 But we can’t do it alone! Here's what you can do to make a difference: 🍴 Plan ahead: Buy only what you need and be mindful of expiry dates. 🍴 Store smart: Keep food fresh for longer with proper storage techniques. 🍴 Get creative with leftovers: Transform yesterday's meal into tomorrow’s lunch! 🍴 Donate: If you have excess food, consider donating to a local charity. 🍴 Compost: Turn food waste into compost to reduce what ends up in landfills. Reducing food waste is a simple yet powerful way to help the environment, fight hunger, and make the most of the resources we have. Together, we can all play a part in building a more sustainable future! 🌍 #TNSCatering #TogetherWorks #ContractCatering #IDAFLW #StopFoodLossWaste #FLWDay #RecipeOfChange #EveryPlateCounts

🇬🇧 UK RETAILERS SET UP FOOD WASTE DISTRIBUTION PROJECT TO FEED MILLIONS Tesco, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer are among 15 organisations that have come together to tackle food waste and hunger in the UK through a new redistribution initiative. Called Alliance Food Sourcing, the retailers are working with manufacturers, logistics providers, and food charities to identify thousands of tonnes of surplus food and distribute it to families and individuals in need. It was launched on the one-year anniversary of King Charles’s Coronation Food Project, through which companies decided to collaborate on food waste reduction and redistribution. Alliance Food Sourcing sits within the IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution), a food industry research charity, and will oversee new ways of redistributing the 4.5 million tonnes of surplus food found in the UK supply chain every year. According to environmental non-profit WRAP, a quarter of the UK’s food goes to waste every year, 60% of which comes from households and 25% from the manufacturing, hospitality, and retail sectors. It’s responsible for 4.5% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, around 11% of Brits go hungry annually. Leaders from the companies involved have launched an appeal in trade publication The Grocer for other businesses to put aside competitive differences and become involved in the effort.
