Managers hiring hack for the start of April. Currently, we are in a skill-short market and candidates often have more offers on the table than you would expect. If your hiring process is unnecessarily long and complicated, with 4 or 5 stages, you will likely lose the candidate. Please don’t shoot the messenger. It’s a fact of the current market. Taking 44 days to fill an open role is, in my opinion, totally fine. As long as that doesn't mean you are taking 44 days start-to-finish with a single applicant. I firmly believe that hiring should be an intentional process that leads to the right candidate for the role at the right time. Sometimes, you don't find the right person for a while, but it's better to leave the role vacant than fill it with someone who you know isn't the right fit. BUT...to make a candidate wait that many days to know if they got the job? Not acceptable. This is not an "I want to see what else is out there" or "just one more interview with them to be sure" situation. You should be able to interview someone for the first time and have a decision within two weeks, tops. It's not a comparison game - you either think they are a good fit or you don't. FOMO in the hiring process has to stop. It's not fair to the candidate and it's not fair to the organization's resources. Interview, process, perhaps interview one more time, process, decide.
