🇩🇪 The decarbonization momentum is continuing in Germany, with #greenhydrogen leading the charge. The German government has recently signed on for €4.6bn of funding for 23 green H2 projects across its territory. Among the initiatives supported by the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) scheme are efforts to supply up to 1.4GW of hydrogen production capacity, with nine electrolyzers projects and 10 pipeline projects for a total of 2,000km. https://lnkd.in/e7cv9J7G

Tender launched to develop a hydrogen ecosystem in Belgium. By Edward Laity A tender for the development of a hydrogen valley in Belgium’s Wallonia region has been announced by the Walloon Administration. The tender is titled, “Service market aimed at supporting the Walloon Administration in the specific governance of the hydrogen sector and in the establishment of a hydrogen valley in Wallonia.” Published on May 29 2024, submissions must be completed by 21 June. The valley concept will encompass a comprehensive ecosystem where hydrogen production, storage and usage are all integrated and it will act as a pioneer model for other regions. https://lnkd.in/dxT_xCqy

Today the #MoU to prioritise seamless cross-border cooperation between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany on hydrogen initiatives on a regional scale was signed (https://lnkd.in/dyrfNJZf). "The MoU outlines several key activities to be implemented within the framework of this cooperation, including information #exchange, joint meetings and workshops, collaboration in events, and unified communication and promotion of outcomes."... "The signing of this MoU marks a significant step forward in the collaborative efforts of the Belgian, Dutch and German industry, universities, research institutes, and civil society to drive innovation and foster the widespread adoption of hydrogen technologies in Europe. It also sends a strong signal to the respective governments and the new #EuropeanParliament that collaboration between neighboring Member States will be key to strengthening our #hydrogen market for the future."

Germany has signed off €4.6bn of funding for 23 green hydrogen projects under the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) scheme. The projects cover up to 1.4GW of hydrogen production capacity, 370WGh of hydrogen storage, 2,000km of pipelines and the use of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) for the transport of 1,800 tonnes of hydrogen per year. 70% of the funding will be provided by the federal government, while the states of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Micklenburg-Western Pomerania will contribute 30% for the projects in their states. It comes as part of the €6.9bn EU-wide third IPCEI Hy2Infra scheme supporting 33 projects in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Slovakia, agreed in February this year.

Together with several other CEOs of European hydrogen companies, I had the pleasure of meeting with EVP of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, in Brussels this week.   A key topic of discussion was how Europe can avoid replacing one unfortunate dependency (imported energy) with another (clean tech). Unfortunately, Europe seems to have lost out on solar and battery technology; wind and hydrogen technology might be next.   To prevent this from happening, the EU needs to get its industrial policies right and create a level playing field where the continent’s hydrogen OEMs have a fair chance of winning. That does not mean that the EU should block foreign OEMs from exporting their products to Europe but everyone needs to play by the same rules and be held to the same standards.   Today, European companies find themselves at a significant disadvantage in Europe. For example, - Chinese OEMs receive massive direct and indirect financial support that dwarfs what Europe has done so far and what it’s planning to do. This allows them to sell cheap products to Europe - Chinese OEMs have limited domestic compliance & reporting requirements whereas European OEMs are subject to onerous EU rules and regulations. The reporting burden and compliance cost for European OEMs keeps growing every year. Meanwhile, there is limited scrutiny of Chinese exporters. - Chinese OEMs are preferred when state-owned Chinese companies award contracts while European companies cannot even bid on these unless they set up shop in China or enter into JVs with Chinese companies.   In short there is one set of rules for European OEMs and another set of rules for Chinese OEMs. Therefore, we argued that the next European Hydrogen Bank auction should have 3 non-price criteria to ensure fair competition, quality jobs, and value creation in Europe: 1. The electrolyzer cells/electrodes must be made in Europe 2. The electrode surface treatment must happen in Europe 3. The stacking of electrodes must happen in Europe   We need the EU to be a referee and put an end to the disadvantages European OEMs experience on their home turf. Low Bid Shock in First European Hydrogen Bank Auction Some €720 million ($773 million) has been awarded to seven green hydrogen and ammonia projects under the first pilot auction of the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB), an EU financing vehicle to help accelerate the growth of hydrogen production in the bloc. Germany also offers specialised technical insight and know-how along hydrogen production chains. 🤝 This results in potential for excellent cooperation between the two countries along the hydrogen value chain. Eternal Power GmbH took part in the European Hydrogen Week - with constructive meetings with our partners and promising keynotes. Our team came home with three main takeaways: 1. The EU has set ambitious targets and funding instruments have been put in place to finance hydrogen projects. Now is the time to push the rapid implementation of REDIII by Member States. 2. Demand side incentives are urgently needed to attract private investment, enabling a fast ramp-up of the market, and establishing Europe as a green #hydogen and derivatives leader. 3. The technology required to make green hydrogen affordable is already available. Public and private sectors need to allign on planning infrastructure - such us the hydrogen backbone, gas storages, #ammonia crackers and terminals - along with closer cooperation among Member States. Eternal Power is excited to continue our work on developing high priority green hydrogen projects in Germany, Europe and overseas and to contribute to preparing the hydrogen market and infrastructure ramp-up.
