Last week Sam Veal joined ‘The case for design codes’ webinar organised by Office for Place. Where do you start with good level design in your projects?

“As a small practice busy pitching for and delivering projects, it’s easy to postpone strategic thinking almost indefinitely. Julia focused on clearly communicating our work to targeted audiences, and created a plan we can implement in stages. We would certainly recommend her to anyone in the same situation.” William Haggard William and Josh at CarverHaggard had been struggling to make time for communications, feeling overwhelmed by the options and unsure of what to prioritise. This is a common problem with studios who contact me – aware they should be doing something but not sure how best to use limited time and resource. Having been focused on delivering a successful run of community projects – including the RIBA Award winning 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning in Brixton – Carver Haggard wanted to increase their visibility in the industry and connect with new audiences. Glowing feedback from their clients highlighted their most valued attributes and identified specific sector challenges. Combined with further research, this was key to understanding how Carver Haggard could share their skills and establish themselves as useful allies. I identified different ways William and Josh could connect more directly with clients to highlight their knowledge and track record. It’s great to see the strategy being implemented from their studio and – as with all my clients – I’ve been on hand when they need a steer.
