NESP Marine and Coastal Hub’s Post

In northern Australia, it is vital that the expansion of industries such as agriculture, mining, and tourism is balanced with a commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Achieving this balance requires a holistic approach that considers the well-being of people, culture, the environment, and the economy. This can be achieved through effective planning, development assessment, management and community engagement. Unfortunately, this is not always done optimally. An innovative NESP Marine and Coastal Hub project is conducting research to determine best practices for ecologically sustainable development planning in northern Australia. This project aims to establish a comprehensive network and integrate community, industry, and Indigenous perspectives to inform policy for future regional planning at both jurisdictional and commonwealth scales. Through sentinel case studies, the project seeks to gain valuable insights that will shape future planning and ensure sustainable development. The project is led by Prof Allan Dale from James Cook University.
