InsectMicrobeMashup #15: The German Cockroach and it's Intriguing Relationship with its Gut Microbiome Domínguez-Santos et al. explore the necessity of the gut microbiome for the survival and development of the German Cockroach. Cockroaches have a complex symbiotic system, with the gut microbiome playing an important role in digestion, and the obligate endosymbiont Blattabacterium which manages nitrogen recycling in the fat body (an insect analog of the human liver). Key findings include: 📌 Germ-free cockroaches, devoid of gut microbiome but with normal endosymbiont levels, showed mostly unchanged survival and developmental parameters compared to control groups. 📌Notable differences were observed in the female weight 10 days after adult ecdysis and in uric acid reserves. Uric acid is a major waste product in cockroaches, and these results suggest that the microbiome plays a role in nutrient absorption and digestion, even though it is not essential for cockroach survival and development. 📌The absence of gut microbiome resulted in a starvation-like phenotype, indicating its potential involvement in host nutrition complementation. These findings suggest that the gut microbiome of the German cockroach, while not critical for survival and development, contributes to the host's nutrient management, particularly in uric acid storage and utilization. Whether or not this applies to other cockroaches remains to be seen! Read more here: Domínguez-Santos, R., Baixeras, J., Moya, A., Latorre, A., Gil, R., & García-Ferris, C. (2024). Gut Microbiota Is Not Essential for Survival and Development in Blattella germanica, but Affects Uric Acid Storage. In our interview series "The Big Questions", experts from RWTH Aachen University will provide insight into some of the world’s most pressing issues. 👍 Professor Thorsten Cramer is here to kick things off. He is a specialist in internal medicine and he has been head of the "Molecular Tumor Biology" teaching and research area at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen since 2014. He is currently the chairman of KetoMed e.V. (www.ketomed.de), an international professional association that provides independent information on the subject of low-carb diets. In addition to nutrition, he is interested in evidence-based medicine and increasingly in the basic ideas of the philosophy of science. 🙌 In this interview, he discusses the right approach to nutrition and explaines, why salt 🧂 is not a killer and why fat is not inherently unhealthy: ➡ https://lnkd.in/exuKaFR4 📸: Heike Lachmann ✍: Nicola König #BigQuestions #nutrition #health #medicine #biology #teaching #research

At Nutrition 2024, the American Society for Nutrition recognizes some of the most noteworthy and innovative studies in our industry. This weekend, NutriScience’s VP of Science and Innovation, Dr. Edward Dosz, Ph.D., presented the results of the most recent KeraGLO® human clinical study. The KeraGLO® clinical study highlights the benefits of the free L-amino acids mix, as well as their potential to be aminobiotics – this goes beyond our understanding of L-amino acids as the building blocks of proteins and suggests an exciting new perspective on nutricosmetic use. To find out more about KeraGLO®’s clinically studied, tangible, and visible benefits for hair, skin and nail health at 500 mg, please reach out to us for details on the new study. #Nutricosmetics #Aminobiotics #KeraGLO #Nutrition2024 #ASN

Head of EXPERT’Biome CDMO Business Development at Lallemand Health Solutions - Support the development and production of next-generation probiotics and Live BioTherapeutic products
EU Probiota 2024 comes to an end. What a great event with so many nice talks of which some take home messages to think about: 👉 Postbiotics: numerous clinical studies compared postbiotics and probiotics effects paving the way for discovery of new mechanisms of actions and emphasing new needs of regulatory frameworks. 👉 Gut / Skin: increasing publications, emerging ideas on skin inflammation and odors linked to people’s diet as well as new M&A demonstrate the dynamic of this field and that new innovations are about to come ! 👉 Modulation of gut microbiome: not so easy to define the right strategy even when using synbiotics approach, this has to be linked to personalized care as each individuals has a unique microbiome colonization story. Thanks @NutraEurope #Probiota #Lallemand

Dr. Jennifer Monk, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Health & Nutritional Sciences in the College of Biological Science, specializes in researching the impact of non-digestible dietary components on the function of the mucosal immune system and overall intestinal health. Her work explores how microbial fermentation of these components produces bioactive metabolites, whose effects on the host vary depending on the composition of the microbiome. By investigating the effects of these diet-derived metabolites on epithelial barrier integrity, immunological tolerance and metabolic function, Dr. Monk's research aims to provide insights that inform dietary recommendations and promote intestinal health. #IWD2024 #InternationalWomensDay #WomensHistoryMonth #InternationalWomensDay2024

🎉 Happy to share our latest publication on the effect of a probiotic formulation on cognitive performance, mood, and gut microbiota composition! Our 12-week study demonstrated that the probiotic formulation significantly reduced cognitive reactivity to sad mood in moderately stressed adults. Additionally, we observed an increase in the abundance of beneficial gut bacteria, specifically Lactiplantibacillus and Levilactobacillus brevis, in participants who responded positively to the treatment Curious to dive deeper?
