This is true for me. I've worked for a boss who didn't like people of color, I left. I worked for a boss who used derogatory language about when talking about all people of color, she was let go. I worked for a company that knew I was working on my education and let me go due to my "new schedule" that we mutually agreed upon. I worked for a company that was impacted my mental health so bad I began day drinking. I left. These are just a few examples of how some companies have poor management, and poor working conditions. I will never forget the emotional labor it took to make it through the days working for these people and these companies. But what I truly hope is for the people who are still working in these companies in leadership roles, I hope that they simply do better. It's time. It's beyond the time. I also hope that the Black employees who are working with these companies don't feel stuck due to skills, money, loyalty, etc. There are wonderful companies out there that know how to treat their employees. There are companies out there that are still working to get it right and not settling for less. There are companies and leaders out there who are not blaming their employees for their declining mental health, and instead are trying to learn how they can play a more supportive role.

It's February 1st, which means it's officially Black History Month. We'll be celebrating over at MKTG WMN, seeing as we're both a Black-owned business thanks to my lovely Co-Founder Natalie Cantave and a community that stands behind our commitment to diversity and inclusion. We're going to highlight our Black members and other Black women in marketing throughout the month. And while I'm so thrilled to honor this month and what it stands for, I can't help but pause and reflect on a few things: - Why is Black history month the shortest month of the year? (As Natalie recently mentioned in a MKTG WMN newsletter) - Why does it feel like the efforts to lift up the Black community from 2020 are also "history" (and not in a good way)? Corporate culture seems to have forgotten all of the commitments made in 2020 with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement - Why are companies who are attempting to support the Black community still missing the mark? It's not enough to simply appoint a DEIB advocate or host a Black History Month happy hour. You must not only recruit Black candidates for open roles, but also hire, empower, promote, and pay your Black employees equitably. While these conversations should be had all year round, I hope this February's Black History Month can serve as a call to action for my fellow white folks to double down on much of the work that started to gain traction back in 2020. Because we can and should do better for the Black community. Period. #blackhistorymonth
