"When the going gets tough, the tough get going..." I grew up with that phrase. Billy Ocean did it proud. I find it coming to mind more and more nowadays, in various shades of humour, irony and grit...   We just finished capturing a snippet of the humbling and inspiring experience we are involved in with one such bold and tough exemplar: working with the city of Rivne, in Ukraine to accelerate their green transformation by harnessing the support of the European Cities Mission (NetZeroCitiesEU). Amidst the challenges of war, Rivne, Ukraine, joined the EU Mission project NetZeroCities to achieve its ambition of a greener future. (reuters.com) The documentary showcases Rivne's story and how, with support, a journey can begin.  EIT Climate-KIC works with cities, to support change at whole city scale to achieve climate neutrality. We see how challenging it is to achieve transformation. Cities have political and institutional barriers to overcome, technological and innovation gaps to bridge, huge shifts in skills and mindsets to achieve, massive finance gaps to fill and infrastructure challenges to address. No where is this more true than a city in the midst of a devastating war that continues to take its toll, adding insult to injury. But even in the face of these obstacles, Rivne persists and has become a beacon of hope and example not only for Ukraine, but for other European cities. Over the next month and half, EIT Climate-KIC will explore how we can together work towards a vision where cities, regions, and countries can transform into just, climate-resilient, and regenerative places. 2️⃣ new projects have launched under #HorizonEU: SUN4Ukraine (Sustainable Urban Net Zero Network for Ukraine), coordinated by Eurocities and #U_CAN (Ukraine towards Carbon Neutrality), coordinated by Technische Universität Dresden! These two sister projects, kicked-off in May, are working together to support the sustainable rebuilding of Ukrainian cities and advance their climate neutrality goals 🏙 🌳 ✅ Objectives: - Foster collaboration between Ukrainian cities and cities in the EU Cities Mission to drive progress and recovery in Ukraine - Provide capacity building, targeted support and expertise for Ukrainian cities to build robust climate strategies aligned with their reconstruction plans         ➡ Want to learn more about these projects? EU Sparks for Climate hackathon is a collaborative initiative, with the European Commission, citizens, and researchers all playing a crucial role. 💡 Curious about how the Polish #MissionCities are fostering collaboration at the national level? A series of in-person meetings is taking place across May and June to strengthen  long-term cooperation between the Polish Mission Cities and the Polish national authorities. This is a significant step forward for Poland's climate action efforts, bringing together municipal and national representatives to work towards climate neutrality by 2030. The Ministry of Climate and Environment is leading this initiative, inviting representatives from all relevant ministries to ensure cities have comprehensive support in planning and implementing their climate strategies. During this series of meetings in #Warsaw, all five Polish Mission Cities are present and working hand in hand to overcome national level barriers. Discussions include decarbonising the building sector (Poland's #PilotCities' Activity focus #Krakow #Łódź #Rzeszów #Wrocław #Warsaw), climate finance for implementation of climate plans, national climate policies, and more 🌍 ✅ Cooperation between local and national authorities is essential for addressing local and national challenges, and for forging important partnerships as cities journey towards climate neutrality. Today I had the pleasure of sharing some insights of what is required to decarbonize the maritime sector at New York Climate Week at the We Don't Have Time talkshow together with Johan Svendsen and Daniel Barcarolo. Unfortunately there is nothing like a magic wand, just “fixing it” so several things need to happen “in orchestra” to decarbonize the maritime ecosystem and it might seem impossible. But it is only impossible if we allow it to be impossible!
