Just got back from this training. There are a few key lessons that I walked away with. I serve as an Intelligence Officer. My key responsibility is to analyze the opposing force and how they are operating on the battlefield 1. Quickly adapt to change - The enemy doesn't stay put. It is critical to understand where the enemy is at all times so that our forces stay safe. Adapting to enemy's movements and analyzing their next steps must be done very quickly in order to win the fight. The same is true in business -requirements, needs, budgets, and staff - changes over the course of the project. Identifying these changes and analyzing the impact on the project is crucial to knowing what response is needed to minimize impact and get the project across the finish line. 2. Understand that wrong analysis impacts lives - If my analysis is wrong, the soldiers conducting operations are put at risk. If I tell them there is no enemy in the area based on my analysis, but I turn out to be wrong, lives could be in danger. Of course this is a training exercise but the principle is the same. It is no different in business. Leaders need to understand that livelihoods, families, careers are impacted due to bad analysis. If wrong analysis leads to the budget being blown quicker than expected, then the staff feels the changes and often it is a loss of a job or a smaller bonus. It is crucial for the leader to understand their analysis impacts those around them. 3. Care for those you lead - the mission comes first, but in order for the mission to be successful, soldiers must be cared for... So in a large way, the soldiers come first. The same is true in business. As a leader if you want to get a project across the finish line, then put your employees and those whom you lead ahead of the project. People are always more important than outcomes. If you care for the people, the outcome will often be far better than if you placed the outcome first. #leadership #growthmindset #success #military

It’s Friday …. Yay ! Thought we’d do something military today. No matter what anyone says we believe the A11 watch manufactured jointly in WW2 by Waltham, Elgin & Bulova was the first what has now become known as a Field Watch. However there were a number of iterations of the A11, so you will find A11s in the European Theatre with both the USAAF and a variation with the RAF, the model,shown here is rarer as it’s a FSSC-88-W-800 which denotes a US Navy pilots watch. As most of the war with Japan involved infantry and the US Navy and was fought in the Pacific over large stretches of water and small Islands so most US Navy pilots operated from Flat Top Aircraft Carriers or were based at Pearl Harbour. If only watches could talk this could tell a story we’re sure ! How many of you have heard of a US Air Force Combat Controller? It's not a job that's well known inside the military, let alone to those outside the service. But these unsung heroes are a special forces cadre that doesn't get all the glory the Navy Seals or Delta Force gets, but their contribution to dynamic battlefield environments is equally significant. U.S. Air Force Combat Controllers (CCTs) are highly trained special operations forces and FAA-certified air traffic controllers. Their primary role is to deploy into combat and austere environments to establish and control airfields, manage air traffic, and coordinate air support. While their primary mission is airfield and traffic control, CCTs are also trained in direct action, reconnaissance, and personnel recovery. They often participate in offensive raids and defensive operations alongside other special operations forces. And that's precisely what John Chapman's mission was in Afghanistan on March 2, 2002. His actions earned him the Medal of Honor twice over and his courage is a testament to the unbreakable America warrior ethos. We couldn't pay any man enough money to live up to John Chapman's memory, so instead we just put a guy in a t-shirt we designed to honor and remember him. The Military Awards System is corrupted and overwhelmingly favors officers. Can someone explain what is going on here. As you can see in the main picture, as a BGen this officer does not have the Combat Action Ribbon (CAR). Then top right as a 3 star, he doesn't have the CAR either. Then bottom as a 4 star, he has the CAR....how did this happen? The CAR is for Colonels and below "who have actively participated in ground or surface combat." The ribbon is awarded to members of the Navy and Marine Corps with a rank no higher than captain and colonel, respectively. So how does a 4 star end up with the CAR all of a sudden? First as a product of this eight decade absence and second as matter of deep personal reflection on whether or not I (would have)personally lived up to the ethos the article espouses. Emphasis in ALL CAPS added. “The eight-decade absence of deadly conflict with an enemy of equal or superior capability has eroded the warrior ethos in generations of naval officers and senior enlisted leaders. Its absence has caused PERVERSE INCENTIVES TO METASTISIZE…” “Whether aviators, submariners, or surface warfare officers, U.S. Navy flag officers are now largely trained, groomed, and selected to PERPETUATE THIS BUREAUCRACY that is top-heavy with administration.” “The crucible of combat quickly SHINES A LIGHT ON INCOMPETENCE. It is common for warring great power militaries to fire and replace numerous commanding officers after poor combat performance, whether they be unit-level leaders, or senior flag and general officers.” It will take courage to thread the needle of serving and preserving the bureaucracy for the good of the institution it represents v. breaking humpty-dumpty in a way that won’t allow for putting him back together again for the good of making Halsey’s.
