This employee spotlight is an excellent one. Wayne Brogan took some time to chat with Oleksii Furkal from Ukraine and hear more about his fantastic story of coming to work for PCL Energy. Hi Oleksii, I start all these interviews with the following questions; What is your trade? And where did you start your career? I am an apprentice pipefitter. I started that just last month, but I have worked for PCL for more than one year. Do you have any family members in the trades? No, it was the best mistake of my life. We know the story, but how about you tell me how you came to work for PCL Energy? Of course, I was looking for a job as a drywaller/framer and entered the wrong office by mistake. I walked into PCL Energy instead of PCL Builders, and that's when I met you, Wayne. PCL Energy helped me find a better life in industrial construction. How are you enjoying your apprenticeship? Do you have any thoughts after your apprenticeship, another trade certificate? I really like being a pipefitter. I work with the best people, and we have a lot of fun. I have no further thoughts after this apprenticeship; I love my trade, but maybe later, I will want to learn a new profession. Do you have a mentor? Would you like to be one? All of the PCL team are my mentors. I hope to be a mentor in the future and help people who need it. Let's change gears and talk about your hobbies, favourite music, and what you wanted to be as a child. My hobby is my family; I love spending time with my wife and son. My favourite music right now is Imagine Dragons, AC/DC, and Guns and Roses. When I was a kid, like all kids, I dreamed of being Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), haha. But when we grow up, we understand that our real heroes are our parents. Last question: do you have any dream projects? It's nothing special. I dream of a big house, travelling more, and hopefully, a big project with PCL for 20 years! I also dream of the end of the war in Ukraine. Thank you again for your time, Oleksii.

I admit I'm a little bias towards apprenticeship as my background involves apprenticeship and as such I had first hand experience of learning skills through the program. I'm proud of our teams that continue to promote apprenticeship to our workforce. The majority of our craft workers are in trades where apprenticeship is NOT mandatory. Within our industries many employers choose NOT to support their employees through the apprenticeship program. The thought of losing staff from your team for months every year to attend in class training, tuition costs, and mandatory pay increases, is likely unappetizing to many. We're firm believers in investing that time and those dollars into our people because we know that in the long run this investment simply means we have THE BEST team around! #apprenticeship #indigenousbusiness #training

In Australia there are two main incentives that employers can receive from the Australian Government to help promote job-based learning and apprenticeships across different industries. The first is the Priority Wage Subsidy. Through this subsidy you may be eligible to receive: - 10% of your apprentices wages paid to you for the first 24 months (up to $1500 per quarter), - 5% of your apprentices wages paid to you for the third 12 month period (up to $750 per quarter) This is for occupations listed on the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List and for a qualification that is a Cert III or higher. The second incentive is the Hiring Incentive. If you aren't eligible for Priority Wage Subsidy you may still be eligible for the Hiring Incentive. This is a one off payment made after 6 and 12 months of employing an apprentice. $1750 for full time apprentices $875 for part time apprentices So it's not only apprentices who benefit from government incentives but employers can as well.
