🌈 Today is International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, a day where we show our solidarity with LGBTIQ+ communities and emphasise the importance of mental health support for all individuals. Despite progress, these communities still face discrimination and stigma that can greatly impact their mental wellbeing. The NSW LGBTIQ+ Health Strategy (https://lnkd.in/gA9FFCSU) is a significant commitment in the history of the NSW Health system, providing direction to ensure the best care is delivered to LGBTIQ+ people for their optimal health and wellbeing. This extends to the health, wellbeing, and safety of NSW LGBTIQ+ health staff as well. Research shows that a large number of LGBT people in NSW have experienced mental health conditions, with higher rates of suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Intersex people in NSW also commonly experience mental health issues, highlighting the urgent need for support and resources. It is crucial that we champion inclusion and create safe spaces for everyone, especially transgender and gender diverse individuals who face the highest levels of distress. Ruphence uses CBM’s psychosocial support services due to mental distresses caused by an arranged marriage and her refusal of it. She is now a mental health champion involved in inclusive communities meetings, where inclusion, resilience, and independence are championed. With International #WomensDay coming up on March 8, we are reminded of how important it is to #InvestInWomen. Donor countries and governments must conduct research on the impact of sexual violence and #GBV on women with #disabilities and address and invest in fighting it within existing or new gender-focused policies and programmes. #DisabilityInclusion #EmbraceEquity #IWD2024 #IWD

So, so happy and proud to share this report that I’ve been working on since 2021(!) In collaboration with Dr Rosie Nelson. Foreword by the amazing Lois Shearing. Our research found that: 🩷 50% of bi+ people report having at least one mental health condition, compared to 11% of the general population 💜 One in three (32%) of bi+ peole were out to none of their healthcare professionals, compared to 19% of the LGBT community as a whole 💙 Only 51.4% of bi+ people reported being in “good or very good health” compared to 75.5% of the general UK population For more important findings like these, read the Hard Done Bi report here: https://lnkd.in/eXfx3J2V

Wrapping up #pridemonth with sharing the experience of yet another amazing Looking Glass volunteer! We are so grateful to work alongside such incredible and compassionate individuals all year long. Mainstream views on what an eating disorder "should" look like can invisibilize the ways that people with non-cishet bodies and identities might appear, which can add layers of challenge to an already challenging reality. People shouldn't have to conform to a normative way of living with eating disorders to receive meaningful and sustained support and care. Meet Jen Ruth (she/they), one of our incredible peer support volunteers in our Hand in Hand and new 2SLGBTQIA+ Online Peer Support (OPS) programs. Jen shares with us what inspired them to volunteer with Looking Glass ⬇️ "Being involved in my community has always been essential to me; I believe that we heal and thrive in community with others. I have lived experience with an eating disorder and see the prevalence of EDs in the people around me, so when I learned about Looking Glass and the crucial work it does, it felt like a very natural place where I could offer support. My queer identity has definitely contributed to my awareness and experiences of intersectionality, which is necessary to understand the myriad factors at play when you are supporting someone in recovery from an ED. Being 'other' in some way, whether that is related to your gender identity, body size, health, or something else, is often very challenging and also reminds us how important connection and support are, so that is where my identity intersects with my peer support experience." Our findings on suicidal tendencies from the latest #LGBTIQSurvey are a clear red flag.   Young people, trans, non-binary and gender diverse people are those who suffer the most.   Being who you are should not be a struggle. To advocate for gender-affirming policies and care, FrameWorks Institute outlines six strategies for communicating effectively about trans youth: 1. Connect the needs of transgender youth to the needs of all adolescents. 2. Talk about overall wellbeing, not just medical care. 3. Always connect the dots between gender-affirming care and mental health outcomes. 4. Tell positive stories about transgender youth who do get the services they need. 5. Use a moral argument. 6. I recently had the opportunity to present a Seminar Paper on the topic "Psychosocial Insights in the Lives of Intellectually Disabled: Insights from Asha Jyoti." The base of my research paper talked about how individuals with intellectual disability are more likely than their non - disabled peers to be victims of violence and sexual abuse as well as commit violence and sexual offences. I have made my Casework client's life stories as a window into personal lives of people narrating the challenging life circumstances, such as stigmatizing and discriminatory attitudes, as well as a sense of bewilderment, uncertainty, and identity blurring.
