St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) welcomes the Government’s announcement on the expansion of acute hospital bed capacity. This comprehensive plan, unveiled by Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly and Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe yesterday at SVUH, aims to deliver 4,367 new acute hospital beds by 2031. Highlights of the Plan: - Delivery of 3,352 new beds and 355 replacement beds. - A significant increase in bed capacity to meet the evolving healthcare needs of Ireland. - Since 2020, an additional 1,218 acute hospital beds have already been delivered. Professor Michael Keane, Interim CEO of SVUH, said, “We welcome the government’s commitment to bolstering hospital bed capacity across the country. This initiative aligns with SVUH’s dedication to providing exceptional patient care and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for all.” Minister Donnelly emphasised the transformative impact, noting that this expansion is akin to opening six large hospitals, which will be a game-changer for patients and healthcare workers alike. Based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, this annual program recognizes outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals. Included among this year’s recognized facilities are 23 Critical Access Hospitals earning Top 100 status for the first time, as well as 19 Rural & Community Hospitals receiving their first Top 100 honor. 43 US hospitals among world's best: Newsweek Forty-three U.S. hospitals were named to Newsweek's 2024 "World's Best Hospital" list, and four were in the top 10. Newsweek partners with Statista for the annual ranking of 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries. For the first time, Chile and Malaysia were added to the ranking. Hospital scores were based on online surveys of more than 85,000 experts and public data from post-hospitalization patient surveys on their general satisfaction. The score also considered hygiene and patient-physician ratio, and Patient Reporting Outcome Measures use. They also listed the best hospitals by country, with lists for each country including a listing of top specialty hospitals. 🏥 Ministry of Health (Singapore) is introducing a new not-for-profit private acute hospital model, inviting private operators for consultation. This aims to address rising healthcare demand, emphasizing the need for increased bed capacity. The unique twist of being not-for-profit and prioritising affordability raises intriguing questions. How does this redefine "private" healthcare, typically associated with service-frills? As a junior doctor in a public hospital, I often grapple with the blurred line between good medical care and service excellence amid resource constraints and unrealistically high expectations among some patients and family members. For example, an angry patient demanding for an MRI to be done the very same day in the absence of any medical urgency. This initiative sparks contemplation on the delicate balance between public and private healthcare. How can a not-for-profit model navigate service expectations while staying true to its mission? These questions resonate with my experiences, prompting valuable reflections on the evolving healthcare landscape. The best hospital in each state, per Newsweek Newsweek has released the top 600 U.S. hospitals ranked by state, sorted by a score that factors recommendations, patient experience, quality and patient-reported outcome measures. Newsweek calculated scores for each hospital by weighing recommendations from peers (in-state: 32.5%; out-of-state: 7.5%); patient experience (17.5%) based on publicly available data; hospital quality metrics (40%) per CMS and the The Joint Commission; and patient-reported outcome measures implementation (2.5%). Newsweek partnered with Statista to conduct a national online survey for the rankings, in which tens of thousands of healthcare professionals were asked to recommend the leading hospitals from their respective state. (Recommendations for their own employer were not allowed.) A score was assigned to each hospital based on the number of recommendations received, which ultimately accounts for 40% of the overall score.
