You know how memories come flooding back when you hear particular songs? A few days ago, I heard a song from Godspell; it took me back 16 years, when a dear friend and I started a youth theater program at our church in New Hampshire. Godspell was our first show. I am so proud of that program and its impact on those involved. It was a particularly important shared experience for our youngest child and me.
As the music played, I wondered about a detail of the show, and thought, “I can look it up in my files.” And that’s when it hit me: Why am I still holding onto those files? All those notes from producing the shows, engaging hundreds of volunteers, involving dozens of kids over seven years. Is it time to let go?
Why do you hold onto things? To remember? To validate? Sometimes items hold power over us because of the deep memories they elicit, both positive and negative. Sometimes we just put stuff away and forget about it, which is what I did with the theatre files. But I don’t need the files; I have pictures to remind me of those years.
Some people hold onto files and other things because they represent accomplishments. What would happen if the stuff of that work, that life, were to be released? Does it mean none of it happened, or it wasn’t important?
If you have files and other items tucked away that you never reference and don’t need anymore, consider letting go. Take pictures or scan the most important documents if that helps. Give thanks for that time in your life, for the contribution those items represent. Remember that all you’ve done — milestones attained, work completed, gatherings of friends and family that filled your heart, whatever it is — those things aren’t negated by letting go of the stuff. Without it, you can hold your memories close to heart, where there is always plenty of room.
